Remote (key-fobb) entry

Hi,

'97 XLT 4.6L. I bought this truck used, and it did not come with key fobbs. But, it does have an anti-theft system (light on dash lights up, and alarm sound), so, I thought maybe I might have keyless/remote entry ablity. I searched this site, and learned to look for the the white module box under the dash by the brake pedal to see if I had the keyless ability.

Well, I found a box up there, but it was grey and had no lettering or numbering on it at all. I looked at a buddy's F150 with keyless entry, and he did have the white module - my grey box was mounted in the same spot and all the same wiring was connected in the same way. My guess is my grey box might be some sort of replacement module or aftermarket module.

Does anyone know if there is anyway I can get key fobbs that would be compatible with this? Even if I get Ford key fobbs - how would I program them since there are no code numbers or anything written on the grey box?

Thanks for your thoughts.

DBLD,
Yeah, you can get the keyfobs off of Ebay (at least you used to be able to), and they will come with instructions on how to program them to your truck. I had to do the same thing with my '99 Explorer that didn't come with any remotes, but I knew it had the option. If you've got the flashing 'Alarm' light in the dash, you've got it, too. Don't quote me, but you have to do something like, turn the ignition on and off 7 or 8 times rapidly, at which point the locks will activate. Then you push one of the buttons on the remote (and on each additional remote if you have them), and then you're programmed. But anyway, check out Ebay and you should be able to find several listings. I didn't pay much at all, like less than $20, and got two of them. Good luck! Later.

The '97 F150 uses different remote transmitters than the newer vehicles. The Ford fob you need has three buttons (Unlock, Lock, Panic) with THE WORDS SPELLED OUT ON THE BUTTONS. The newer ones only have icons on the buttons - these will not work with your truck.

BTW, am pretty sure the Remote Keyless entry module for your '97 may have been gray.

You can try entering keyfob programming mode to tell for sure you have the ability to buy and add keyfobs (just do steps 1 & 2):
1) Cycle ignition key from OFF to RUN quickly 5 times (must be completed within 10 seconds), ending in RUN the fifth time
2) The locks should cycle (Lock then Unlock) indicating you can now program keyfobs.
3) Press a button on the first fob, locks will cycle again
4) Press a button on the second fob, locks will cycle again
5) Turn ignition to OFF, locks will cycle one last time.

Thanks!

Thanks for the replies! I'll give it a try - I guess I just wasn't sure if I could program key fobbs if I had an after-market module under the dash, but, can't hurt to try.

I will try to make sure I get key fobs with the words on the buttons - thanks for that tip. I have seen some on Ebay with the code on the back spelled out - any idea which code or part number I need for this truck?

Thanks for all the help.

Remote entry

Hi Folks,

Just got my pair of key fobbs from ebay, programmed them, and they work great!

Buschman, you were right, my '97 XLT does have a grey module under the dash by the brake pedal, and it works great, so I guess the factory module in 97 was grey, not white.

For anyone who needs it, the key fobb for a 97 (and maybe earlier years too) is the one with three buttons with the words "lock", "unlock", and "Panic" written out - it does not have the icons on it. The numbers on the back are:

FCC ID: GQ43VT4T
DOC: 1470 K763

Thanks!
