Question Mirrors,horn,transmission problems

Hi guys, I'm a newbie here.
I'm having a few problems with my truck, as follows:-

power mirrors not working

od light/switch on gear selector not working and
transmission shudders at appx 35-38mph just before od engaged

horn works sporadically & alarm sometimes chirps for no
apparent reason

...this has me . Any suggestions on probable causes of those symptoms.

Thanks in advance guys,

Tony

Mirrors not working: Probably the $12.00 switch in the door that takes minutes to replace.

Transmission shudder: Suggest replacing transmission fluid.

OD Light: Have you checked the fuses?

Horn: Might be the clock spring.

Remove mirror switch check for voltage on orange/green wire and ground on black wire. Start with removing steering column trim and checking wires going into shift lever, bad about chaffing and breaking for O/D switch concern Start with trans service for shudder concern, change filter and be sure to drain torque converter.Start by checking voltage to horns on yellow/green wire at horns. Does truck have add on theft system.

No add on system, only factory theft system. Truck now has 43,340 miles if that makes a difference I don't think trans fluids was changed in about 20k miles...how often should that be done...truck is pampered..no hard work..I have a '93 F-150 for that

I 've not seen any problems with factory theft systems on f150s.With some scan tools you can go in and see what caused last 8 events (unwarrented theft cycles). When this happens is it one horn chirp or many like theft going off.Trans service 20 to 30 K. Fluid breaks down causing torque converter clutch shudder.

Thank you much, sir. I'll try to have a look at these next week...I need to stop tinkering with my LS1 Z28(yeah, I know ) and sort out the truck's gremlins.

I'll let you know how it goes...again thanks for your replies.

Sir,

I've been very busy at work the last couple of weeks but will have some free time this week. My question is ..to drain torque converter entails removing tranny does it not?

Bigone, the torque converter is drained without pulling the trans. You will find a rubber plug (about the size of a silver dollar) right under torque converter in trans. bellhousing. Remove this rubber plug and turn engine over by hand until you see the drain plug for torque converter. It has a7/16 head on it.

Update on truck-

Transmission is shifting great...fluids and filter changed & convertor drained. Fresh oil does make a difference

The wiring were chaffed away on the gear selector ..now
I have my 'OD' light back

The mirrors indeed needed a new switch but now we've discovered that driver's side motor is shot and passenger's side only functions up and down...need new motors

The horn needs a clock spring....does changing this by removing
airbag assembly from steering wheel affect airbag operation
in the future...the shop says no sweat, they do it all the time.
I was under impression that one had to be certified to remove the airbag assembly..anyone?

Also, the local Ford dealer only sells the mirrors as complete
assembly....is there any way to buy the motors only?

Thanks guys,

Tony

bigone Changing the clock spring isn't to bad of a job. There is special steps to air bag deactivation. I would recommend letting someone who has done this before perform this task. With the money you have save on the other fixes its time to give a little back(just kidding)What test did you do to determine it was the clockspring? Most of the time when a clockspring is bad the speed control, horn are inop and the air bag light flashes.I am not saying it isn't just wondering what steps you took.On the mirror motors Iwill ask my parts manager and get back to you.

Sir, thanks for your reply.

I had the work done at a friend's garage (still saved a few $$$$ ) His tech stated the clock spring was the problem as all fuses wiring to horn was good...he tested the horn otherwise and it works.... I'm not sure what he did to ascertain clockspring as the problem...maybe from experience?
I am somewhat reluctant about removing air bag and having problems with it later on..but they assure me that they have done this on numerous occassions.

The horn and power mirror motors are only existing problems..everything else works fine.

Await your comments,

Tony

TONY No luck on the mirror motors. Parts manager said nothing but mirror assy. only. Then I went and asked body shop manager if he knew of a source for motors only, same reply. As for the air bag being removed I remove 2 to3 per week and have never had any problems. If you friends have done these before should be no problem.
