You needed a L wiring harness, PCM, and I think even the GEM is different from your 97.

Add to this, the PCM and GEM for the L is looking for the PATS in the instrument cluster, you need to get around this as well. Only way I can think of it by replacing the instrument cluster with one from an L, and the PATS programming to match.

Never seen someone try to use a non L PCM with a L engine. ???

There are a few posts on L engine swaps, a member on the boards here did his, and helped ~8 others do the same. It lists in detail all the items that are needed for the swap.

You can bypass PATS by installing a resistor somewhere in the circuit. Don't ask, I just remember seeing this when I was looking at putting an aftermarket remote start into my pickup w/ PATS.

Tony,

You are 100% correct. The Ford part number for this is :
1L3Z-19G365-AB. This is the ring that installs around the ign under the steering coulmn cover.

Only problem is, this programs like a new key.

I thought that the non-Ford remote starts you had to program the new key, most cut the teeth off if it, when putting it in the install. Maybe that is only some of the kits, maybe I am totally off my rocker
