blinker problem
blinker problem
several times when i hit my left blinker, the little signal on the dash wont come on and ill hear a very fast click click click. After attempting to get it to work right, itll finally straghten out and work normally. My turn signals work both front and back so im not sure what the problem is and why its acting up....
It's the multifuntion switch. Either the connection is loose or the internal contacts have a patina coating.
Since you're in college, you probably don't want to spend $80.00 on a new switch. After you've removed the switch, you'll need to use your college brain to take it apart and clean it. Brakeleen and Q-Tips work well. Only tools required are a phillips screw driver and a set of star bit sockets.
1. Disconnect the battery ground cable.
2. Remove the ignition switch lock cylinder.
(1) Insert the ignition key into the ignition switch lock cylinder and turn to the RUN position.
(2) Push the (A) ignition switch lock cylinder release tab with a punch while pulling out the (B) ignition switch lock cylinder.
3. If equipped, twist the tilt wheel handle and shank and remove.
4. Release the (A) four clips and remove the (B) steering column opening cover.
5. Remove the upper and lower steering column shrouds.
(1) Remove the three screws.
(2) Remove the lower steering column shroud.
(3) Remove the upper steering column shroud.
6. Remove the multi-function switch.
(1) Remove the two screws.
(2) Disconnect the electrical connectors.
(3) Remove the multi-function switch.

hmmm....ill try and use my "college brain" to do this, however im by no means the stereotypical spoiled stuck up college panzy. Ill see what i can do on it....and yes 80 dollars is too much to fix...ill live with a broken blinker before ill pay 80 bucks to fix it.

Holy F'n Crap........I was just about to post about this issue!!! No lie! The only difference is that is my RIGHT blinker ('98 F150). If I hold it I'm going to change lanes, it will work fine. However, if I push it all the way over, it just click super fast and with no display on the dash, and none of the flashers working.
I also tried my hazzards, and they did work when this issue was going on. Just odd.
I was thinking about getting a new flasher to see if that helped but over the course of the last week, I noticed that it was only when the truck was cold (ie, it had been snowing or freezing temps outside). Once the truck warmed up, it worked fine.
So.............is the fix to get a new switch in the column, or just screw it and let the truck warm up?

I had a problem with my blinkers where they would work fine until I put my tilt wheel down. Then they wouldn't work. So, I brought it back to the dealer and they fixed it. Then I started getting static in my speakers AND the blinkers stopped working again. Another trip back to the dealer and they told me they couldn't find the problem with the blinkers. When I got into the truck I put the tilt wheel down and it did it again. I left the truck running & got the service manager to show him the problem. They ended up changing a wiring harness & (2) front speakers. No problems in the last 4 months.
Im relieved to see I wasn't the only one having these problems.
Good luck,
Ron

I've had the same problem as well, but I've been gettin into the habit of letting her warm up as much as possible. The blinker only malfunctions when the tilt wheel is down and its cold out. No too big of a deal considering I have 180,000 miles on her.

I'm a rich, wealthy, industrialist and I too found $80 to be excessive.
I hired a homeless person to ride in the bed with two large signs.
He holds up:
'Look Out He's Turning Left' or 'Look Out He's turning Right'
on my verbal command.
If he looks like he's getting cold back there, I yell out "Flashers" to warm him up.

Thanks Guys
I have been having this exact problem lately on my '97 F150 in the subzero weather we have been having in MA. Same symptoms... happens when it's cold or very damp. Stops after the interior warms up.
This forum is a great resource. Thanks again for having it all figured out in advance
