Power cut off

1998 V-8 Triton short bed.

I installed new battery in September 2003. 2 days ago the battery light on the dashboard control panel came on. The book tells me that this indicats an electrical problem. Apparently the battery was not being recharged as I drive.

Today as I am driving around town, all electrically powered parts of my truck stopped- turn signals, emergency flahsers, radio, lights, dashboard items, everything. The truck wouldn't start- even after trying to jump it.

Has anyone had this problem before and if so, what was the remedy to fix it? I am thinking a new alternator, but am praying its something simple like a blown fuse soewhere.

Any advise/help?

please email me if possible.

Unhappy

I had the exact same thing happen to me a couple of weeks ago. If I'm understanding this correctly even the guages on the dash went dead while driving or running?

It was the alternator on mine. I had the added pleasure of getting a bad replacement alternator, from a dealer no less. Lasted 50 miles and did the same thing all over again. The second did the trick, and has been fine ever since.,,,,98

Was there a beeping coming from under the dash during all of this?

It was my alternator. It also fried some of the wiring somehow. $450 later....

Yes, there was a beeping coming from the dashboard, which really threw me off. I couldn't figure out what was beeping when I had no power. I thought it was some computer system and was afraid I had damaged the engine somehow by driving it for 3-4 miles with absolutely no power.

Ouch! Mine cost me about the same actually, without any "fried wiring"? At least I got some money back in my opinion. They covered the tow from the bad alternator, and the part, labor, etc.... Would have been about a $200 tow. However they didn't cover the hotel. Oh well. I figured it was a pretty good payback, for letting us sit for two and a half hours on the side of the road. The cell phone signal was so weak I had to walk to the top of a hill so even the roam would work. Man it was chilly.,,,,98

I had done everything I could think of before leaving on the road too? trans flush, coolant flush, fuel filter, oil change, etc....
