Angry Wiper stuck on (in park mode)

My 1998 F150 wipers won't turn off. I tracked the problem to the "park mode" being on. It is trying to park the wipers, but doesn't realize it gets to the correct spot, so it just keeps wiping hoping to eventually get to the park position! Haven't taken it in yet, but this smells expensive already - for some problem that is probably a 10 cent part gone bad.

Not a problem when raining, but quit a pain in sunshine. I see there was a recal on the 2000 - 2001 F150s for a variation of this. Has anyone had problems with other years also?

are your wipers coming on when you dont turn them on?

and playing with the blinker multifunction switch turns them off for awhile?

then you need a new multi function switch and check wiring connectors for loose or pulled out wires

Nope it's not the multifunction switch. Essentially, when you want the wipers on, everything works fine. On slow, on fast, on intermittent - all works fine. Problem is when you turn them off, they stay running slow. I tracked it down by pulling the wiper relay under the hood. The wiper relay puts 12V to the wiper park circuit when the multifunction switch is in the off position. This park voltage drives the wiper motor to "Park" the wiper. Problem is the wiper motor has a switch inside it to tell it when the wiper is in the park position and then it stops. In mine, the wiper never realizes the wiper has reached the park position, hence it runs continuously.

I am not looking forward to removing all the junk to reach the wiper motor either! Anyone ever do that?

its not to hard actually just becareful of breaking the window.

remove wiper arms
then there are some screws that hold the wiper cowl down
takes a little pull to pop clips then there is a few 8mm bolts holding wiper transmission to body

did you swap the relay with another one like the horn relay to see if the relay might be sticking? ive seen that happen on explorers.

Yep. And then I took the relay apart and carefully put a little piece of thin plastic between the contacts so when the wipers are off, the 12V park voltage would not be fed to the wiper. This allows me to use the truck without the wipers going in the sunshine! Downside is you have to turn off the wipers when they are down because I have no park function, and no intermittent function.

After I fix the switch in the wiper motor, I can pull the plastic out of the relay and I will be back to normal.

I guess not too many others have had this problem, at least no replies to this post.

Thanks for your thoughts and help with the wiper cover.

check for water contamination under the wiper motor cover black plastic piece I think ford recalled some for inspection and replacement of the cover which is a connector for the wipers also. not sure if your truck applied or not you would have to go to a dealer and have them check for open recalls if you never got a letter in the mail.
