engine dies when ac/heater turns on

When I turn on the AC or Heater/Defroster, sometimes the RPMs go to zero and the engine dies. I am guessing that I have a bad alternator or the belt tensioner needs to be replaced. The battery is about one year old. Any ideas?

The automobile is a 1988 Ford F150.

If your compressor is on the way out it will seize and stall the engine. If your IAC is dirty the load on the engine can stall it because the IAC can not open up fast enough to compensate for the added load of the A/C compressor.

Adding to JMC's comments, if you can give it a little throttle and it keeps running when engaging the A/C compressor, the compressor is probably fine.

Replace the IAC, then disconnect the battery so that the computer is forced to relearn idle speeds and engine loads when everything is brought back online.
