4 pin wiring problem?

I have a 1997 Ford F150 4x4 offroad package with the standard 4 pin factory connect. I towed a trailer last night, had to modify the trailer plug to fit my connector. When I had all headlights and park lights off the trailer lights worked great. When I turned on my headlights I had no turns on the trailer or brake lights? Is this the trailer wired wrong or my truck? Please help!

I'd say the trailer lights are wired wrong. What was involved in modifying the trailer plug? The wiring colors should be as follows for a 4-way connector:

- brown = running lights
- white = ground
- green = right side stop/turn
- yellow = left side stop/turn

On Edit: I found THIS LINK on how to configure/check the wiring.
