tail light / dash light problem

hi guys...
my 1991 f-150 XLT has me stumped. ive only owned the truck for about 3 weeks. last week the tail lights decided to stop working (when i was towing a trailer no less). this was accompanied by the lights on the dash going out.

i found that by pushing in the headlight switch a little ways, it caused both to come back on. great, bad headlight switch, easy fix. NOT. replaced the headlight switch today and the new switch acts in the same manner as the old one.

i *could* just mess with the switch every time to get my lights working. but i also noticed that when i do this it causes my amp/battery gauge to bounce around. this isnt a good thing either.

any suggestions of a place to look for this gremlin would be helpful! thanks in advance!

i wonder if the switch is just old and loose and the trailer towing thing just sped up the situation.

You may need to break out the ammeter to check.

I was having almost the same problem. Mine have flickered back on twice since going out. I have changed the switch out but that did not help. I have removed all trailer wiring also. Fuses are all fine.
