Cruise Control
Cruise Control
I am new here and was wondering if anyone had any suggestions as to why my 97 F250 LD Lariat's cruise control went out. About two days later my speedo started bouncing and would go to zero when i would reach speeds higher than 50. The ford shop says that i need a new speedometer head and they are confused why the cruise has gone out. The thought that it was a speed sensor and then a brake sensor and now they aren't quite sure. They think that it might be a short. Anyone have any suggestions? Thanks ahead of time!
Hi Jamz, and Welcome!
I'll take a stab at it. If the speedo gear is shot your cruise control would probably not operate properly. Think about it: The cruise won't operate below a certain speed (35-40mph?), and if it is getting faulty info it probably would work breifly or not at all.
So what's the deal? The speedo gear on a 97-98 is a mechanical device that costs less than $20, and takes 5 minutes to replace because it is on the trans, not buried in the cluster. And it is designed to be easy to change. (Go figure
)
The attached link will help you calculate which gear you need. I'm no Ford tech, but I would try this first. Get back to us for some more info, or SEARCH for changing a speedo gear in the Other Drivetrain Forum. Hey, at least I have a better guess than the boys at your dealership.
