Will I have enough power?

HI~

I'll be running two electric fans, a Derale powered tranny cooler, and ASP pulleys. Will I be putting my charging system under too much stress? I was thinking about buying an Optima deep cycle battery, but I was wondering if I should buy it (Optima battery) before or after I install the fans?

Thanks!

PS I just have the stock Motorcraft battery

Not sure about the draw of the fans, however your alt should put out over 100 amps. In regaurds to the deep cycle battery; I would advise against it. They are designed to be drained right down before they are charged up again. i think you would be wasting your money there. You will have to consider how much time you will be running the engine and in what conditions. If you are crusing the highways most of the time your alt should have no problem keeping your battery charged, however if you are putting around town you may have a problem.

Rob-
I will be running two 225 watt electric fans, not sure of the amp. draw. I do do a lot of city driving, so that is why I was considering a deep cycle. Occasionally I hit the freeway, so on those rare occasions, I would charge up the battery again.

Thanks,

Matt

Amps = Watts/Volts

So 225/12 = 18.75a

Then you got 2 fans, so if they both run at full output. 18.75 x 2 = 37.5 amps.

Now, there's no way that those fans will be running full time especially when you have other electrical loads on e.g. main beam so your standard alternator should be fine.
Stick with a regular battery too. Any reputable brand but if your old one is ok, save the pennies.

Matt,

Neal has almost the same config; twin Derale fans on the rad, and a single smaller Derale on the tranny cooler ( under the truck ) and he has the Optima Yellow top battery, on the stock alt ( battery is also relocated under the truck )

If you think Duty cycle for the fans, then you should only have ~ 24 amp load part of the time, which is usally at a stand still, or in stop and go traffic.

Keep in mind that brake riding stop and go type traffic or at a stop sign is when the charging is lowest on the pulley set ( min 850 rpm to maintain full capacity if memory serves me correctly ).
Don't really need to go 65 MPH to charge a bettery, it is just above 850 RPM. So if you drive around town with OD off, you should have that made no problem.

So once you take off, you are back above min charge RPM, and good to go.

I don't see a problem with this, unless you are driving 80% of the time at night in stop and go traffic, running a big sound system to boot. That is another problem all together...

HI Everyone-

I have decided that I'm just going to upgrade to a 130Amp alternator (Motorcraft). I figure that worst case senario, I will be running both fans, the tranny cooler, headlights, windshield wipers, my stereo system, and heater. That will max out my 95 Amp alternator, so I might as well just upgrade. I can get a 130A mtorcraft for wholesale prices, which will save me $70. It's probably worth it. As for the battery upgrade, well I don't think I'll need it with the new alternator. I'll be purchasing both ahead of schedule, tomorrow!!! YEAH!!!

SSCULLY- I decided to go with Mike's kit. My mind is always changing. Thanks for all the help and advice. I'll buy you a beer sometime! <--- There you go!

Thanks,

Matt
