Where to tap for Keyed Ignition power (01 F-150)
Hi--
Just wondering where would be the most appropriate place to tap for a 4.5 amp appliance (Keyed Ignition Only), on a 01 F-150. I will need a tap with a 20A fuse. Any suggestions? I am going to be installing Electric Fans, soon, so I will have to keep that in mind while tapping!
Thanks

mf150,
Under the dash if you look up behind the kick panel directly under the steering wheel column you will see a large gague red wire with a black strip ( it is this on a 01 F-150 SCrew ).
Tap this as power for a relay ( the switch position ) and run a seperate fused connection from the battery to the relay power in pin, then power out to the device or fuse block.
I take it the 20V should be 20A, and there is no place to get 20A hanging around safely, or the needed 4.5 A and the ~ 1A for the fan controllers.
Few options on the fuse block:
1) Napa has a 6 position fuse block tht take a center lead in, and powers the 6 positions out. This is 3 on each side.
2) New England Solar power has a 6 position fuse block where all 6 are in line.
3) Bunch of ATC inline fuse holders ( ugly mess )
4) Little Fuse has a 5 position inline fuse holder, from Pep Boys, or other places might have it.
There are fuse blocks at AutoZone and PepBoys, but these usually have a stand offs on the bottom for mounting to like a fender and don't lend themselves well to mounting under the dash ( too tall ) .
The summary of the relay hook up is :
Pin # 85 : Fused connection from the Red w/ Black stripe wire ( 1 amp fuse ).
Pin # 86 ground
Pin # 30 Fused 12 awg from battery for 20 A connection ( fuse it right next to the battery )
Pin # 87 output to fuse block or fuse holders for device(s).
Let me know if you need any additional info on this.

Steve-
Thanks again for the help ( I got the tranny cooler kit first)! I also decided to go with the PPI Electric Fan Kit, from Mike. I'll be purchasing prob in two weeks, after the bills are paid!
the mods. keep on getting more expensive! I guess the worst is over with. I have to remember that I am still under warranty.
Also, thanks for the correction regarding Amps/Volts. I took Physics last semester and it's already out of my brain.
I corrected it above.

Matt,
No problem. If you need some pictures, I can take some of my bkie, with the fuse panel so you can see what I'm talking about. The one I got was 12 or 18 dollars. It can't hurt to have the additional fuse slots ( 6 is kind of over kill in the cab ) so maybe the 2 in line fuse holders aren't that bad.
I figured it was a typo, but I can never be too sure, that is why I put in the disclaimer. Hoped it wasn't 20VA

Good luck.

Steve~
Thanks again. I'll let you know how it turns out. I'll be installing the Electric Fans, Tranny cooler w/ durale fan, at teh same time (July 8). I have to wait a month, because that will be my next "off"time. Have to wait a month for vacation and fun! If you have any pictures available, please post them, but if you don't don't stress...just if you get around to it.
