headlights
I'm having a problem with my headlights, I own a 97 f150xlt 4x4 with the bumper fog lights. What's happening is when I turn on the switch and I get my parking lights to come on but when I go to turn on my headlights they won't come on at all so if the headlights don't come on then neither will the fogs. Don't know if it is the switch or a relay or what??? has anyone had a similar problem they could help me with this???
heater,
Parking lights, no headlights, but high beams work ?
It would seem strange to loose both, but did you check the fuse for the headlights.
The Fuse locations in my 01 SCrew for the low beams is 26 & 28 under the hood fuse box.
zippymike,
If you do not get the low beams, nor the fogs, that kind of would point to the switch, but I am not 100% sure that the fogs work with the headlight fuse is out. I don't have stock fogs to know either way sorry no help with that.
When you put the switch to the headlamps position, and turn on the high beams, do the high beams work ( not the flash to pass function if it is in that year. )

If you have neither low nor high beams, then sorry it probably is not a fuse.
The low and high beams have seperate fuses.
In the 01 SCrew, there is a Fuse for each low beam headlight ( 10A ) , and a single fuse for the high beam switch ( 20 A ) which is also the high beam indicator lamps on the cluster.
Check them all the same, but don't be surpised if it is something else.
I have not read of a headlamp switch going out as of yet, but it could be the case.
With all dead, I don't think there is a common power to the switch ( have not seen one, but I also have not looked for one ) to point you in that direction.
Checking fuses is always a good place to start, remember to test them with a 12V tester or yank them and use an ohm meter, as the break could be a slight hairline break, easy to miss.
With the lights off, can you use the flash to pass mode of the turn signal stalk ?
Also another thing to check is if you have autolamps ( 1 click to the left, don't know when this was added to the F-150 ) and put a towel over the grille on the dash for the sensor, do the lights come on ?
Just step by step, parking lamp position works.
headlamps position no headlamps ( do the parking lamps also go out at this point ?, if so it just might be the switch )

I still have the flash to pass working and still have parking lights when switch on the headlights. Didn't realize that the high and low beams were on a different fuse. But all seems to point to a faulty headlight switch which is possible because of the manner of which the switch operates to turn on the fogs, since you have to pull on the switch **** to turn them on. It also could be my wife driving it more than I do And she probably is a little rougher on the switch than I am. Gotta blame someone??
Double check that your year has seperate low / high lamp fuses. I am not sure either way on your year truck, I only know the '01 for sure on that.
Go ahead..blame the wife......we won't say anything....that is unless you flame any of us, then we are going to rat you out in a heart beat
Good luck getting to the bottom of this, post your findings back for the next memeber.

I have checked all my fuses. I have parking lights and if I push the high beam on the turn signal they will work. Got me. I am making lots of friends, driving with high beams. They are all waiving at me ( with one finger).
For the '01 year the output of the switch to the headlamps is Red with a yellow stripe. This is going to the multi function switch.
If there is voltage on thsi wire leaving the head light switch, I doubt it is the switch itself.
Once I find my sho manual CD, I'll look in section 417-01 for the diagnostic info on the head lamps.
Red / yellow strip is also the wire that activates the fog lamps.
I do not know if the wire color changes from year to year, but this is one way of testing the headlamp switch to the multi function switch.

Not sure if this will help or not but, the foglight/parking lot modification 'how to' shows wiring schematics...

Re: re: headlight nightmare
zippymike & heater,
Drop me an email in my profile, and I send off the section 417-01 for diags on the head lamps, from the Service manual.
I don't want to even think if you are having a problem with the multi function switch.
BEFORE you swap anything else, drop me an email, and I get this sent off to you.
Talk with you in a bit.

Sounds like of silly, but it is truth in advertising
zippy,
You have a Canadian truck with DRL, don't you? Check the connector to the DRL module or the module itself. It is behind the front grill just below and to the left of the driver head light when facing the truck looking towards the rear. it is just about where the bumper starts.
