I need some help with this decision

I don't know whether or not to go with 4.10 gears or 4.56's. I was planning on going with 4.30's which would have been exactly what I wanted, but unfortunately, they don't make any for the 9.75" sterling axle. I've got the 265/75R17 tires, and if I'm not mistaken, they work out to a 31.4" tire. At 70 mph, I'm turning a mere 2000 rpms. I'm not too concerned with mileage, but I know it will drop more with the 4.56's. I 4-wheel on occasion, and I do tow, so I know they'd be better for those applications. I just don't want to get the 4.10's and be disappointed in their performance.

Thanks
-Flea

If I were only going to run 265's, I would go with 4.10 gears. You said you weren't "too" concerned with mileage, but I would think that the 4.56 gears would make you wish you had been concerned with it.

Again, just my paltry 2 pennies.

Hi Flea,

Go with the 4.10's unless this is going to be primarily a drag-race machine, as you'll be much happier with the cruising rpms, setting fuel mileage completely aside for the moment.

The 4.10's will give you a nice boost in both acceleration and top speed as well (the motor will be closer to it's HP peak in top gear), and makes an excellent setup with your configuration.

Hey Flea!!!!

Hey Flea, I was just wondering what gears you where running now. I have the 3.55LS in mine I was wondering how much do the 4/10's cost and where are you pruchasing them. I myself was thinking about doing the same MOD. After hearing what Mike said I just might have to do that, as long as they aren't to expensive. Thanks Flea for your help, Rolling Rock 1978

Cost

I did my old 83 Broncoback in 94. I put Richmond 4.10's in each axle (running 33x10x12.5's) along with a powertrax locker. It ran me about $750 an axle.

Figure inflation and if it'll cost you, with locker $900, without $500
I guess you may be able to reuse your L/S, but I/m not sure. Mine didn't have one, so I went with Powertrax/Lockright

I saw an add in this months Muscle Mustangs and Fast Fords towards the back of the Mag. This shop somewhere in Eastern PA, was doing gear changes to 3.73's in Mustangs for $298. I'm sure the F150 would probably be the same. You may want to look at it and see if it's within driving distance for you. It says "parts installed while you wait"
