Easy chip question

I bought a Superchip a while back for my F350 PS Duallie. (impressive performance btw). The onboard computer that calculates the fuel mileage in the Lariat package was wrong from that point on, and I expected that since I was told about it up front. Does the chip for the 5.4 do the same thing? Will the odometer be accurate as well, or at least no different than it is now with stock wheels?

Hi Ed,

No, you don't have that effect in the F-150, and it's only present in the PSD since there is such an improvement in fuel mileage from the Superchip tuning, primarily. We have many PSD owners who have literally picked up as much as 4 & 5 more mpg, for example, though most are in the 3 more mpg range when towing big loads. We have had access to a few PSD's to do comparisons of the trip computer's calculated mpg to the actual mpg calculated manually, and found that in several units they were actually very close. But we have also had PSD customers who have told us that they did actual comparisons of measured mpg manually versus what the trip comptuer said, and the trip computer showed a bit higher mpg numbers than what it actually got. So there can indeed be some variance there in the PSD models just as you are seeing in yours, but it's not changing the *odometer* reading, it's the trip computer not responding properly to the changes in injector timing & fuel flow.

You don't find many F-150's with trip computers, so it's generally not an issue in these trucks.

In general, there isn't the potential to pick up 4 or 5 more mpg in the gasoline engines from the Superchips tuning like there is with our tuning in the PSD's. In these F-150's, it's generally more like 1.5 mpg gain on average, with maximum reports of 3.5 ore more mpg gain only very rarely.

There is no change in the odometer reading with the Superchips tuning, the only potential exception to this would be if we have been asked to do a custom program to fix speedometer error as a result of the vehicle owner doing a gear ratio and/or tire size change, and even then it's just the by-product of fixing the speedometer's calibration.

Give us a shout if you'd like to go over any of this in more detail,

Thank you Mike. On my PSD the trip computer mileage always showed about 3 mpg better than calculated. I loved what your chip did for that truck and that is why I am so interested in one for my F150. Dang bank accounts...never have enough cash when I need it.

Hi Ed,

Sounds about right, we've seen a number of them give that kind of result in mpg differential.

You're right, there's *never* enough money to go as fast or do as much as many of us want, especially for us hot-rodders & motorheads. You know what they say about the difference between men & boys being the price of our toys............

All in good time...................
