Thumbs up Just spoke with QuikTrip...

Just got a call from QT headquarters. They were more than happy to explain things and answer my questions. They told me that for instance Texaco just got bought out by Chevron, and that their S3 additive was excellent. They also said that they would soon be switching, however, to Chevron's additive, which is what QT uses. They said their fuel came from the same supply that Texaco's did, only difference is the two additives, which is now basically the same thing when the S3 is phased out. They claim to put in 3 times the minimal amount of additives, which puts them up there with the bigger guys. All he could tell me about energy content, was their 91 octane has about 125,000 BTU's energy. He said no one on my area really offers 93 octane, or they would add it to their stations here in KC as well. Still not sure what this means I should run with my chip.

Hi Jackal,

Congratulations, looks like you're doing some good groundwork there!

Nice to see you found someone good to talk to there, that's typical of the "small guys" in many industries, where they are more willing to talk & discuss those kinds of things than the big guns are. It's not often that any oil company will quote *any* energy content figures. What did they tell you that BTU number is per, was that per lb. (pound) of gas, or per gallon of gas?

The Chevron buyout of Texaco is actually kinda old news at this point, that was announced about a year or so ago, maybe even longer, it's been awhile. I don't know when they actually closed on the deal & took over, that could have been just recently for all I know, but the takeover was announced a good while back. There have been a lot of oil company buyouts & takeovers during the past few years, there's Mobil & Exxon, BP & Amoco, Chevron & Texaco, etc.

Anyway, if you want to pursue this, where you go from there is calling the oil companies for your other local brands, and see if you can get any of them to give you BTU #'s (and any other info they may be willing to discuss, of course), so you can directly compare. Anything else they may tell you about their additives, levels, etc. can be helpful, too. If you can get enough of those BTU numbers (and making the sometimes BIG assumption that they're actually accurate), then you can do some comparisons on paper at least, that's a *great* project, nice to see someone doing that kind of homework!

Don't count on oil companies giving up any of that info, and even when it does happen, you never know about the BTU numbers, as they can tell you anything and you'd never have any way of checking them on it. But it's certainly worth the effort to make those phone calls & get whatever information you can, & for what it's worth, thanks very much for sharing what you're hearing with the rest of us!
