Will a chip fix the AOD shudder?

I have a Mountaineer (i know not an f-150, but i have one of those too!!) with the 4r70w trans that has the aod shudder especially under load. Will a chip fix this? I want to fix it as cheaply as possible. I also have put the Lucas Friction modifier in the trans but not much help. Any ideas???

Hi Gobra,

No, a chip is not going to "fix" any mechanical problems, and usually won't cure TQ shudder in these 4R70W's, as that is usually not due to a calibration issue.

Many of these cases of TQ shudder in the 4R70W are due to overheated fluid, and if only the fluid is damaged, then this can usually be remedied by a complete flush & refill of the tranny fluid & of course, replacing the filter. Just adding friction modifier to existing fluid usually will not help, you have to get *all* the old fluid out, including draining the torque conveter and any coolers (both radiator & auxiliary) as well as flushing the fluid lines out.

If you have already done that, then it's tme to check for TSB's first, and get it in for service immediately after, as there have been a number of different TSB's for TQ shudder in vehicles with the 4R70W. The Lincoln Mark 8 has a big problem with this, as the MN12 platform cars don't cool the transmission fluid enough in city driving, and so it's very common to see Mark 8's with burnt tranny fluid, shudder, ruined shift solenoids, etc.

Even if the fluid doesn't look or smell burnt, you can have molecule shear & other breakdown that causes shudder, so if you have not already done a proper complete drain & flush of the tranny fluid recently, do that first. If that doesn't work, then it's time to do your homework looking up TSB's (you can look up Ford TSB's here on this site I think, and you can see both automaker and aftermarket TSB's at alldata.com) and then take it in for service.

You don't mention what model year you have, but if it's under warranty, then of course make your dealership service department take care of this for you.

Good luck, & feel free to let us know what happens!
