Location of 4.30 gears?
Hi Flea,
Gears are something we don't do a lot of on those Sterling units, usually it's just the occasional 3.73 or 4.10 gear change that we see in these trucks, even on the 8.8's that come in here, even though the 8.8 rear end has many more ratios available for it. So we haven't spent any real time looking for anything numerically higher than 4.10 in the Sterling 9.75" unit. Have your tried talking directly to any of the gear makers, like Eaton, US Gear, Richmond, etc.?
Another option is to take a look at the SuperDuty diesels, as they have some different ratios available, if memory serves, I though they had a ratio like 4.30, at least I seem to remember it being numerically higher than 4.10 in certain model years, of course I could be mistaken but it's be worth a few phone calls.................

I called Randy's ring and pinion, and they only had a 4.11 and 4.56 for the 9.75" sterling. Looks like I might have to go with that instead of the 4.30's. 4.56's would be overkill; I still have stock tires. Oh well, 4.11's it is!

Flea,
4.56:1 are not that far off from 4..30:1. Besides if you start going off Road more often with the Tenn Chapter you will soon come to realize that your tires are limiting your truck's ability. Once that starts things will start to snow ball and you will kick yourself in the **** for going with 4:10's. If you have the ORP then you have 265/70 R 17s. According to Goodyear that is a 31.6 inch tire. You can easyly go to a 33/34 on the stock wheels by cranking the torsion bars. Goodyear makes a 305/70 R17 MTR. It is an excellent tire off road and it performs well on the pavement. Well if you switch to that you will need 4.60:1 gears to bring you back to the 4:30s that you wanted in the first place. BFG makes a 285/75 R 17 MT that is 33 inches tall. This tire with 4.56 gears will feel like 4.37 gears. Not far from the 4.30s that you wanted.
If you have the $$ for the gears I would suggest you wait till your tires wear out and decide what tires you want to replace them with and choose your gear accordingly. Stepping down to a 16" rim will open up a lot more choice in tires too.

That is a good thought, JMC. If I can find a good deal on a 33" tire with a treadwear warranty (if such a thing exists!), then I'll spring on it and go with 4.56's. It'll all depend on what happens this winter. I may just stick with the 265/70R17's because I'm still not entirely sure I go offroading enough to justify anything bigger. I've not gotten stuck to date *knock on wood* and I've been in some fairly sticky situations.
