Knock Under Hard Accel?? Microtuner?
Knock Under Hard Accel?? Microtuner?
Ok, having problems with a couple of mods that I have just done. I have put in a new AirForce 1 and programed my computer with the Ford Truck Microtuner...both that I got from Mike.
Ok, Both installations went well and I did not drive her hard until today...2 days after the original install.
I noticed today that under hard accel. my truck makes a knocking sound...loud enough to make me want to get out of the gas?
Not I am not sure if I know the difference between a knock and a ping...but sure sounds knocking to me.
So I went home and tried to reprogram the computer back to original, and that is when it all got f$%k#$ up. After the successful rollback (according to Microtuner) I started up and the engine went wack...Idle all messed up, like the timing was off, Tack was everywhere...missing....Check engine light on and off...little puffs of black smoke out of tail pipe....anywas scared the sh*^ out of me, tried to reset computer, no luck. Only way to fix it was to redo Microtuner....now I can drive again, but still have that knock under hard Accel.....
I always use Texico Premium gas (91 Octane) so I do not think that is the problem.
Only things that I can think of to maybe fix it would be new plugs/wires, or a fuel filter change...as these are all stock and my '97 F-150 4.6L has 81,000K miles???
Anyway....anyone have any ideas.......
Thanks much for any help!

wings_023,
This is none of my business, but I saw it and can understand how you feel. This site is so awsome, that when I have a problem and or panic, I will immediately go to this site and post for help and I actually get help.
But, there is something about vendor/customer rules that says, we are suppose to contact the vendor about specific problems with specific items purchased from vendors off the boards, I think. Anyway, I would highly recommend calling Mike T. and or leaving voice mail right now tonight. He helps everyone, customers, potential customers, curious/confused f150 owners, and even poor boys like me! ha!
Oh yeah, I am clueless as to what your problems could be but when I had a knocking AND pinging under acceleration, it was my stock plug wires at 65,000 miles and right after I had installed a Magnacharger. Good Luck.

I just recently installed a AF1 kit as well, and this weekend was the first long trip with it....Occasionally I would hear a rattle or pinging I guess you could say..and it took me a long time to figure out what it was....but I did.
where the filter rests in the engine bay, there is a small black metal bracket that is right behind the end of the filter. The chrome accent on the tip of the filter would hit that when I went over a bump. The only thing I could think of doing was take a small 1/4" piece of sponge and wrapped it in electrical tape then taped it to the bracket....no more rattling.
Best of luck

Question for you braboin
First do you have a V8....particularly the 4.6?
I posted this question on another forum, but the one who answered had a 4.2L (don't know if that makes a difference or not?)
Anyway, when you shut down your truck do you hear a hiss from the Intake Kit, it only lasts for about 3 sec, and you would not be able to hear it with the windows up..... mine does...it is the same sound as when it is running....just wondering if this was normal or not?
Thanks

I have the 5.4. The only time I hear the hiss, is when I tap the pedal....like it's taking in a deep breath. I was told that it was normal. I don't hear it during shut down.
The only part I didn't use during installation was the small black ring seal. Mine seemed pretty flush, maybe one day I'll put it on and see if there's a difference.
Best of luck.

Hi WIngs _023,
Thanks for giving us a call for Tech Support, that is greatly appreciated! As always, the way to handle any problems is to call us right away for Tech Support so we can help you as soon as possible (vendors can't provide Tech Support here, that is against the vendor rules of F-150 Online).
From our discussions, it sounds like a simple fuel quality problem, though we also talked about that truck at 81K miles apparently still has the original fuel filter on it as well; that alone could cause detonation at heavy throttle from being clogged and not able to flow enough fuel with the additional power the engine is now making with it's modifications, but I suspect this is really more a fuel quality issue. Changing the fuel filter certainly won't hurt, & as we discussed, you'll want to change the fuel filter every 10K miles, instead of every 30K miles as the factory service schedule suggests.
As we discussed, you'll be going to a better quality fuel on the next tank and we'll see what happens once you're about 1/2 way to 3/4 of the way thru that tank of Amoco 92 octane, and after the fuel filter is replaced. The detonation you're getting is only at full throttle, so the vehicle is driveable while you get the fuel quality issue sorted out.
On the "hiss" you will hear briefly from some of these trucks right after first shutting off the engine, that can be normal, for some trucks. All Lightnings do it, for example, and a number of "regular" F-150's sometimes as well. However, with any intake kit it is also worth checking all your connections too, and in the case of the Air Force One intake, you will want to specifically check to make sure you haven't accidentally covered the holes on that rubber piece with the 2 openings on it by pushing it on too far. If you had a straight vacuum leak, as we talked about yesterday, the truck wouldn't want to idle, so that would be obvious, and you aren't gettign that. But you could potentially have pushed that piece too far on and accidentally covered up the holes on the rubber piece that is right in front of the throttle body with the Air Force One intake, the one that has the 2 openings on it, so do check that as well, as that oculd easily cause your problem. I don't remember if I mentioned that when we spoke yesterday, so I just wanted to mention that briefly here for you to check that, and of course, give us a call to go over that in more detail if you like.
We'll be talking with you again as soon as you've run about 1/2 to 3/4 of the way thru the next tank where you'll be switching over to your local Amoco 92 octane, and of course, please do feel free to call us anytime if you want to go over anything else, or if you want to discuss that rubber piece on the AF1 intake, for example.
Thanks again for calling, & talk to you soon!
