Custom chip or mass air?

I have a 92 f150 that came with a 302 and the E4OD tranny. I pulled the 302 and swapped to a 351W. I kept the 302 computer. It ran fine until I added my 6psi supercharger. It was running out of fuel about 3000rpms. I switched to 30lb motorsport injectors. I flood out and runs rough at idle, BUT TOP END IS UNBELIEVABLE. I've run a high 7 secs in the 8th mile with it. I also added 3.73 gears. Now here's my question. I can't seem to find a mass-air kit that does not come with injectors. I find them for the aod also and I am guessing that will work with my E4OD. I have also been told that a custom chip might help me. the 351 is not much over stock.

Please Help.

Mike will be along to help you, but even if you convert to mass air, you still want to get a custom chip.

Thumbs up

I'm with Beastie......you already need a custom chip. I would wait untill the mass air upgrade because that will require another reburn.

Give Mike a call on the phone for all this...it will be well woth the dime...or is it a quarter now

Hi BAW,

Yes, we would recommend converting over to mass air, and then having a custom chip programmed as well. That will result in a system that is far more tolerant of your changes, and that will be much more tunable so that all aspects of driveability are right, in addition to it's all-out performance being optimal.

By the way, there are specific engine displacement parameters in the PCM's programming, so that *does* need to be changed as well. You cannot just drop in 50 more cubic inches & have the tuning be correct, even though it seems to run "ok" seat of the pants-wise, there are changes that need to be made.

The bottom line is, I would convert to mass air *and* have a custom chip done, if you want that vehicle to run right all the time and make it's maximum power with what you've done to it, that needs to be done.

There are a couple of specialty speed-density tuners out there who might be able to get you thru this, but you'll always be locked in to the speed-density system. Mass air has far more potential for modification & tuning in that truck, so that is the route I would go.

This is something that any owner of a speed-density truck (especially the trucks) who is contemplating major modifications like a completely different engine and a supercharger too needs to consider. The expense to convert over to mass air should always be taken into consideration up front and budgeted for, as that gives you access to much better system adaptation to modifications as well as to tuning capabilities. So we advise convertign to mass air and then have the necessary custom tuning done to properly dial in this combination.

You should not expect to be able to just convert to mass air and not have any custom tuning done, no stock PCM is going to just "adapt" on it's own for a supercharger and a complete engine change with 50 more cubic inches being added as well, that should never be expected.

Give us a call if you'd like our help with this, & best of luck whatever you decide, sounds like it's going to be a fast truck once it's squared away & running right.
