Mike Troyer, please respond

Hi Mike,

I am eagerly anticipating an email from you that is a custom tune spec. sheet for a SuperChip per our conversation last week. I also wanted to double check your information on the horsepower ratings for 42# injectors. I think that if I can get away with my FMU and stock injectors, then I will go with a 12 psi pulley and 90 mm MAF and have you burn it accordingly. I know we talked about several issues regarding the A/F ratio with an ATI, so I want to make sure I get all the information straight. If I only start to starve the motor with stock injectors (and above listed mods) above 5000 RPM, I will be fine with that, I just want to re-iterate what your research says. I still don't have any intention of going to the track for 1/4 times. I just want to benefits of the increased lower end power of the 12 psi pulley and 90 mm MAF. Thanks,

-Matt Hunwardsen

I think the best thing to do is call Mike directly...He stated in a previous post that they get inundated with emails, and it would be quite some time to get a response via email. Plus user names on this site, don't exactly ring a bell to a specific phone conversations...so he doesn't really know who he's talking to.

Just ordered parts from him today myself, give him a ring.

Best of luck!

You've been waiting on a chip for over 2 months?...

Don't know if your knockin superchips or nothing, but i wouldn't think that they'd take that long. if this is the case

I do know of a guy that has a turnaround of 5 business days for a custom procharged application chip. his reburn costs are in the low low 100's for anything supercharged... that includes injectors, mass air and cam calibrations.

Talleywacker, you talking to him or me?

If me, I'm certainly not knockin Mike T....I just ordered it today, and expected delivery is this Friday....I was just explaining it's faster to get a response from them on the phone than to wait for an email response....and say your username on this site was 'KickButtLighting'....that really doesn't give reference to a person's real name. So they wouldn't have a way to recall a phone call you had with them based on that....

Mike and crew are the shizznit.

I waited for over 2 months for JDM, and all I got from them was lies and unfulfilled promises. This is well documented on the S/C forum. I am not the only one, who was waiting. Those who did get theirs stuff got the worng stuff, or it shipped to the wrong person, etc. I talked to Mike for over a half an hour Friday, and he said that he would send me the spec. sheet via email. He stated that the time for my custom burn would be a little longer than a week, but it is better than 10+ weeks! People over on the S/C forum are not too happy with JDM right now, and I am one of those people.

Hi Matt,

As we discussed when you called today, we had already emailed that out to you but it got bounced back to us, the email address you gave us would not accept it. Thanks for calling, & we got that faxed right over to you this afternoon, so you should have that info by now. {Please let us know if not}

For future reference, just so you'll know, we do discuss as much as is reasonably possible here given time available & the rules, etc. Generally, if you want to discuss any details with us (details, anything "involved" in nature, etc.) mechanical configuration, tuning, etc., that will need to be done by phone. If you need to reach us in a timely manner, you'll want to call us so we can assist you right away. Email & posts to us here will always be slower to get a response to (unless we get lucky), so if you need to talk to us about something quickly, please give us a quick call.

Just as an aside, In your post you state..............

"I talked to Mike for over a half an hour Friday, and he said that he would send me the spec. sheet via email. He stated that the time for my custom burn would be a little longer than a week, but it is better than 10+ weeks!"

Now I know you didn't intend it to read like that, but the way that sentence is worded would make anyone else think that it takes over 10 weeks to have *us* do that, regardless of what it says elsewhere in the post. In fact, right now the turnaround time on custom tuning from us once we have all the data is running about 7-10 days. I know you know this, this is just FYI for anyone else who may read that post..............

Thanks again for calling today, we had just gotten the notification that our email to you with that file attachment was refused about an hour or so before you called, so we would have called you today at some point anyway, excellent timing!

Now that didn't sound right to me either Mike... Your turnaround has always been typical of other tuners.

Well... except for jdm so I hear

12lb's on stock injectors? I was under the impression that it would be necessary to upgrade. I want the 9lb for my Magna, but I'm going to wait till I can get at least 24lb injectors.
So to determine if the stock injectors will be sufficient we need to have the rail pressure?

If I could get just the pulley and injectors and be safe I could do that sooner than later. I'd miss the chip while it was being reprogramed!

Hi Tom (wittom),

A little bit of quick info here for you, just in case you may not already be aware................................

It's not the boost level that matters with regard to upgrading injectors, it's the *power* level that determines how much fuel system capacity (pump, fuel line, fuel filter, fuel rail & fuel injector) is needed, always.

You may very well reach a power level *because* of raised boost that does in fact require more fuel injector capacity to support, but boost alone doesn't automatically require fuel injector changes, it's the actual power level that needs to be supported that determines injector size.

The FMU/FRU (fuel management unit/fuel regulation unit) that comes with almost every supercharger kit allows the use of the stock fuel injectors until you hit certain higher power levels due to other modifications in addition to the supercharger. In the case of most supercharger FMU's in these F-150's, they will generally allow power levels of around 450 hp or so with the stock injectors. Don't take that as an absolute blanket guarantee of that exact number, as it does depend on the exact rail pressure achieved by the FMU & the BSFC, that's just an approximate level for the purposes of discussion here, just to give a rough idea. Some can support a little bit less, some a bit more even.

Ford rates their fuel injectors based on a nominal 39 PSI rail pressure at idle (though the "range" is 30-50, "nominal" is considered 38-39 PSI @ idle), & about 42 PSI @ WOT. With the FMU, you will easily see 80 PSI rail pressure and even more, perhaps. I don't like to see much more than about 80 PSI or so, as the more rail pressure, the harder the injector has to work to lift the pintle off it's seat, and thus works the injector harder.

*Ideally*, for those looking for absolute best 1/4 mile times, ditching the FMU, going back to stock rail pressure and upgrading the injectors will give you a little bit better performance, primarily in the short times, the first 60 ft. That is because it takes a second or so for the PCM to correct for the initial overrich condition when you first nail the throttle with an FMU installed. However, it's not enough of a difference to scrap the FMU, buy bigger injectors and retune for, unless you're a "purist" or you are literally looking for the absolute quickest 60' times, or if you have exceeded the fuel delivery capacity of the FMU & stock injectors.

Your stock 19# injectors (which all 1997 & up F-150's have from the factory, 4.2 V-6, and the 4.6 & 5.4 V-8's) can effectively flow like a 24# injector at say, 60 PSI rail pressure. At 95 PSI, they can flow as much as a 30# injector would at stock rail pressure, so @ 95 PSI, that FMU & the stock 19# injectors can support well over 400 hp, about 435 to as much as 450 hp, depending on the exact BSFC (brake specific fuel consumption).

Tom, if you want to think about going with more boost to get more power, or raising power by any other means, please feel free to give us a call & I can go over with you in detail just exactly what will be needed to support higher boost levels, or get to any power level you want to achieve, etc., just give us a shout!

Thanks again Mike.

I will go with more boost. It's just a matter of when.

We talked a few months back and you explained things pretty clearly. I should have taken notes!
I have a few noisy injectors that I really don't trust. I might not "need" to upgrade them but for peace of mind I think I will. I am (perhaps a bit too...) concerned about breaking something. I know this truck can take quite a bit bit I've got to make last. At least untill I'm ready to get into the next one. That will be in a year or so. I'm going to be cautious with the mods.

I will be calling you for the next additions. I might have a few things to do.

This truck has already come a long way from my beginning here. I never imagined I would even be at this point. I'll get there. Slow and steady is the pace that works for me.

Hi Tom,

Your truck has indeed come a long way, & by all means, take your time, the only person that has to be happy with what you do to your truck is you, I just responded to your post.

To answer your question about knowing whether you can stick with your stock injectors or not, when you get into a situation where your power level is getting close to what we know the rail pressures usually are with the Magnacharger's FMU, then yes, knowing *exactly* what the rail pressure actually is @ WOT at higher rpms (just before you shift, for example) will tell us just how much those stock injectors can actually flow, we can easily convert that so we then know whether they *have* to be replaced or not.

With your mods (which I think are the Magnacharger, the AF1 intake, the Accel ignition upgrades, the custom tuning we did & the exhaust system, correct me if I left anything out), your 4.6 should be making somewhere in the neighboorhood of at least 350-365 horsepower, and may be closer to 380 hp. on your Side 2 program, depending on altitude & fuel quality. Given those *approximate* numbers, you've easily got more headroom in your fuel delivery capacity for more boost, you should have no problems with bumping the boost up to 9 PSI.

By all means do whatever you feel comfortable with and when, but don't hesitate to give us a call well in advance to go over that in detail, call us anytime so you'll know exactly what we need to do to effect the boost change properly.

Have fun,
