Speedo Correction

I installed 4.10 gears this weekend and of course my speedometer is now way off.

I have a Superchip ready to go in that has the correction built into it.

I have a friend at the local Ford dealership who has offered to try and correct the speedo for me at N/C.

Here is my question. I would like the speedo to be correct, with and without the chip so I lean toward taking him up on his offer. BUT since I have also had this built into my chip, will I have to have the chip reburned so as not to have a double correction and therefore be off the other way after the chip is installed?

Hi Mad,

The chip doesn't have anything to do with what's in the PCM's original program for gear ratio & tire sizing, so there isn't going to be any "double adjustment," etc.

You're also going to find that your friend is wasting his time, he cannot do that to the factory program, because 4.10's were not offered by the factory on any late-model F-150, and thus he won't be able to do anything for that. All he can do is to change to a gear ratio or tire size that was originally offered by the factory on that exact vehicle, they can't enter anything numerically higher than 3.73, which is the "shortest" gearing offered by the factory on the F-150.

The bottom line is, the only time that speedo is going to read accurately with those 4.10's is with your Superchip installed, it's not going to read correctly on the factory program with 4.10 gearing, sorry!

Mike, I think you are mistaken. According to my sales lit. 4.10's are available in 2002 with the 7700# payload group, albeit with the 10 1/4" dif. Perhaps that option package will be excluded due to my engine code?

Regardless of who is right, will it then be OK if he makes the maximum correction possible so that in the off chance I have to drive my truck with the chip out, it will have less than the 15% error it has now?

Mike,

Please read the following post, is XLT correct?

I may be wrong, but....

If he does anything to your computer, like a reflash, then it will have a different code and your chip will not work for it. The chip will then need to be re-burned. Again, I'm not 100% on this but that's what I thought was the case.

Thanks for the tip XLT, I'll be sure and ask him before I let him do anything. I don't want to use up one of my reburns just unscrewing what he does.
