hypertech power programmer III
hypertech power programmer III
Hello, I'm a new member with a question. Has anybody tried the hypertech programmer? is it worth the $350? I like this programmer because it lets you do several things i.e. recalibrate your speedometer, move your rev & speed limiters up, change your shift points to higher or lower rpm/mph, etc. I also like the option of using regular or premium. What do you think?
NO!
I had a hypertech programmer III for my 5.4L truck.. It was worthless!! I took it back 2 days after I owned it. I am now going to purchase a SuperChip. Hypertech's support sucks and they are not very helpful. On the other hand there are a few different guys here who work for Superchips and are more than happy to assist you with your questions or problems that you may experience with their chip. The chip is defiantly the way to go! Call Superchips for more information and ask for Mike.

Welcome aboard!
The topic of the Hypertech comes up here pretty regularly. There are people here who are/have used it. I am not one of them.
I think that you will find that most of us here are using the Superchip. One reason is thet there is a Superchips distributer right here. Mike is not only a Superchips distributer he is also a real nice, knowlegable guy. When we purchace our Superchip from his company, Performance Products, we get more than just a chip, we get customer service that is pretty much unheard of these days. Keep an eye out for his posts.
You will get the whole scoop soon enough, as Mike usually responds pretty quickly. I just want to pass on what I have heard about the Hypertech. I almost had one myself.
Yes, the Hypertech does allow you to change many things. This is really no different from what many chips can do. The difference is that Hypertech is basicly a generic programmer, that will work on many different F150's. Yes, generic does mean that you will get less. Their tuning is doen only for heavy throttle. This means that you will see gains but only at heavy, wide open throttle. I don't know about you but I really don't have the room here to be running at WOT all the time.
The Superchip is code specific. This means that it is tuned for each specific F150's code (powertrain control modual). The tuning is doen at all throttle positions so you get gains all the time. Seems more worth it to me!
Well, I'm not going to try and sound like I'm some expert. I've just spent too much time here. I believe that the Superchip works. Maybe the Hypertech does work but I'm not convinced
Stick around! There is a ton to learn and fun to have! Give it some time. You will be able to evaluate what you need to do!
Have fun!

Hi Loki,
Welcome to F-150 Online!
As you can see from the other posts, the Hypertech unit is not looked on with much favor. It's a cool type of device, but it's actual *programming* leaves much to be desired. It's "generic," meaning there is only 1 program for all similar vehicles, (I.E., only 1 program for all 1998 4.6 automatic F-150's, etc.), and it only changes engine tuning during open-loop operation, which is only at extremely heavy to wide-open throttle. The rest of the time it does nothing for power, so it doesn not help in normal driving, towing, etc., it only changes engine tuning when you're very heavy into the throttle.
As a result, the actual power gains are small at best, and in some of these trucks, power actually goes down a little bit, 3 hp or so.
With the Superchip, you get a much better result than with any other similar type of product, as it is made specifically to match the exact software revision in every single vehicle's powertrain computer, we don't do things generically. Also, the Superchip tunes the engine for maximum horsepower and torque *all* the time, at any throttle position, as well as at any rpm, so it's always giving you more power, no matter how you drive the vehicle. It's very smooth, it just feels like you picked up about 10%-12% more motor under the hood, so to speak.
The result from the Superchip tuning is very noticeable, and you'll also see much improved automatic transmission shifting in automatic models, overall driveability is improved, and the powertrain is much quicker to respond, thanks to the removal of various delays & retards, etc.
Here at Performance Products, we have specialized in improving the performance of these F-150's, as well as providing powertrain programming & tuning for the F-150 platform vehicles for years. We started doing that in the 80's, long before F-150 Online even existed, so we know the platform well & can provide any performance parts and/or powertrain programming/tuning that may be needed for these vehicles.
If you'd like to go over any of this in more detail, please feel free to give us a call here at Performance, our contact information is just below.
We're glad you decided to register here at F-150 Online & enjoy all the benefits of the site, & we hope you'll hang out here with the rest of us when you can!
