Question Opinions/thoughts

Hi

Just curious...for those that read my "Geez..whats next" thread.

I did tape switch...but think ill still relocate.

Been thinking about what happened. Engine ran ok etc..no apparent change in way a/t shifted. It did seem to have abit less power...slowly but gradually.

I dont think much time/mileage accumulated before noticing.

Now...obviously i didnt clear PCM.......im assuming the new program (87oct) was starting to take effect...very slow and gradual with accumulated mileage???

I know MikeT. away at rally...just curious if anyone has a better understanding about what happens when switching programs without clearing pcm and in 87oct. mode using 91oct?

Thanks....OT

The timing keeps on retarding when it's in the 87 mode. It does take a while before you'll notice it, as the timing is slowly retarded. (And, no, Raoul, if you check this... it doesn't mean the computer is mentally ill. )

Hi OT,

Actually, even when we are away at a Rally like this weekend, we always have our cell line available for Tech Support, and included that number in our voicemail messaging system this weekend, just in case someone called in for Tech Support, and a number did this weekend, as usual of course. Just FYI...................

When you flip the switch without clearing the ECU, the change takes effect more gradually, but this also depends on just exactly what the differences are between the 2 programs, as some instructions will be picked up right away, while others take a bit longer. In your case, we're talking specifically about the dual-octane Flip Chip setup, and due to the previous program still sitting there in the microcontroller and adaptive strategy having made adjustments over time, etc., this takes about 50 miles or so to "overwrite," and get the effects of the program change. So it certainly does happen gradually when you do not clear the ECU after changing programs, but then, you do not need to clear the ECU to change programs, we generally only do that when doing back-to-back testing at the drag strip or on a chassis dyno, etc. Unless you are doing some kind of formal testing like that, there's no reason that you have to clear the ECU when changing programs in the dual octane Flip Chip, just fill up with the different octane level & flip the switch.

Virtually everyone with the dual octane Flip Chip just fills up with the different octane when they want to change programs, and then flips the switch. The vast majority never clear the ECU when flipping the switch, as it's not required.

However, you can do that if you want, it's up to you! The only thing that is required is shutting the engine off for just long enough to flip the switch, so that you don't take the chance of the engine stalling by changing programs while you're driving.

Have fun!
