installation problem?

i took my recently purchased superchip and my truck to the dealer recommended by 1-800-898-chip number. but everytime he thought he had it right the truck would shut down. is it just a problem with the coating on the contacts or could it be a defective chip? need help badly guys.

Cool details

what's the problem...what are the symptoms. When is it shutting down, what are you doing when it shutsdown. Why would you take a superchip to a Ford dealer? More details please!

i didnt take it to a ford dealer. it was the local shop that installs superchips that the 1-800 number gave me. and the symptoms were (because i took the chip until i get a good reply on how to install it) when it would start the odometer would read all dash marks, the check engine light went on, and the generator light also went on. and my truck just went basically to the on position. do you think it is just a contact problem or maybe something more serious?

oh.....ok. Well, that sounds a little weird to me. Does the truck actually start and the stop or does it not start at all. And also, does it work fine with out the superchip. Almost all problems with superchips have something to do with the coating on the contacts so I'd start there and make sure everything is clean....other than that.....???

well it starts sometimes but when it did it was after the guy would jiggle the actual computer. but what got me worried was the truck started up and then when i was pulling out of the shop the truck engine shut down. but i go back tomorrow and i will have him clean the contacts real good and see if that works. is there any other problems that anyone has had with the installation on there chip? but i will try what you said and i will post a reply on what happens. thanks man.

no prob.....One sure way to tell is if you remove the chip and it runs fine, then it's probably the contacts. I had my chip in for 3 weeks and my truck started stalling out...cleaned the contacts better and have been trouble free since

And here we go again with the cleaning issues. The process of elemination is your best tool in the tool box.

ONE SURE WAY TO TELL IF IT IS A CLEANING ISSUE IS TO REMOVE THE CHIP, RESET THE COMPUTER, START TRUCK WITHOUT CHIP AND IF IT RUNS WITHOUT SAID CHIP....CLEANING ISSUE.

I am one of those that don't believe that some guy at a shop is going to spend as much time as I would on doing the job right for me.

Hi 20BG02,

You have a what is most likely a very simple installation problem, a connection issue due to improper installation, as is being pointed out by the odometer turning to all dashes (you couldn't ask for a clearer clue). Any competent dealer should have been able to *instantly* realize what was happening and correct that on the spot for you.

Worst case scenario, if the Superchip was bad, they should have been able to replace it instantly. This does not sound like a Superchip problem at all, all symptoms point quite clearly to this being a very simple installation issue.

Thee is a possibility that yor ECU has been reflashed, but evne then usually the vheicle won't start at all in the event of a code mismatch.

You can usually correct this problem yourself, just to to the Tech Articles section here and go to the Superchip how-to. It's old, it was written by someone else (an end user) in a bit of a hurry and so it has a few errors, along with a few places where I am misquoted, but it's much better than what you have right now, and if you follow those instructions you should not have any problem installing it yourself and enjoying completely reliable operation.

The only thing I would have done differently would have been to tell your dealer to keep the product since they could not even make it work.

If all else fails, give us a call at our number listed below and we can tell you couple things to do to get it installed yourself along with the article I referred to above, we don't want to see anyone having a problem like this.

Hang in there, the solution is very simple!

Having just gone through this, I would make sure that:

1. All coating is removed from ALL 30 contacts and;

2. All coating is removed from ALL spaces in between the contacts.

3. Do not scrape down to the "copper".

4. Even though the clip should work to keep the Superchip in place, I would recommend taping the chip to the computer box as well.

As we all know (now), a partially cleaned "plug-in" might work well for a while but cause engine stalling down the road. Because your installer did not do this correctly the first time you took it to him, I would be suspect of how well he cleaned the contacts and spaces in between the contacts.
