Chip before OR after Headders???

Hey Mike (or anyone) I have decided I can't wait to get my chip after all the reading I've been doing on it. Here's my question. I already have a K&N FIPK and Flowmaster si/do exhaust. I wanted to get a set of Edelbrock headders next but have been thinking about getting the chip first due to cost/bang-buck/etc...I am the type that loves to mod my vehicles so even if I'm happy I will still want the headders. If I get the chip first, will I need to do a re-burn or anything else because of the headder addition? OR, should I wait til after the headders to keep from having to do a re-burn? Thanks.

after

I believe(but not positive) that headers would require a reburn

Hi Galaxy,

Headers require custom tuning to get the Air/Fuel ratios dialed in for best power gains. Some people will do headers and use the "standard" Superchip performance program, and you can get by like that in many cases without having issues of detonation from a lean condition, etc., but you don't get the full power gain you could from the headers. To get maximum power gain from the headers custom tuning is always best.

There are a couple of ways you can go here................

If after doing the Superchip, intake, exhaust and headers you are not planning on any other modifications that would require custom tuning, you could go ahead and just use the "standard" Superchip for your vehicle's computer code right now, and once the headers are actually installed, you could have us update it with custom tuning. The additional charge for the custom tuning to do that is the same whether you do that at time of purchase or later on, so you don't incur a financial penalty for doing it later on as an update as opposed to doing it at time of purchase, so you can enjoy the Superchip right now.

Another approach would be since you're going to be doing modifications that will benefit from custom tuning (the headers), you might want to use the 2-program Superchip Flip Chip, as it's cost includes custom tuning for any modifications at time of purchase (except a supercharger, those programs cost more). This way you will also have 2 programs instead of 1 and your total cost including custom tuning would be less than with the single program Superchip to which we have to add the custom tuning fees. This way you could have say, a dual octane configuration allowing you to run either 87 octane or premium gas, or a setup for premium gas on one side and then racing gas at the other, setting it up for the drag strip, or what have you. Most people opt for the dual octane configuration in daily drivers for maximum flexibility.

You can actually do it either way, you could just use the standard single program Superchip and have it updated for the headers later on, or you can take the route of the 2-program Superchip Flip Chip which includes the custom tuning. If it were me, what I would do would be to get the Flip Chip right now so I could enjoy it right away and spend less total with the custom tuning. We can go ahead and tune both programs for the headers so you'll be all set for whenever you add the headers later on. As long as it's not going to be say, a year before adding the headers, it won't hurt to run the custom tuning for the headers before you actually have the headers installed, you'll just be running a little bit richer.

If you'd like to go over this in more detail, please give us a quick call & we'll be happy to.
