What are my options for a chip.

I have a 96 4.9L and I don't see much about anything as far as chips for this engine. I know PKRWUD had good results with a Jetchip in his 4.9L but he had some problems with it later.
Any brands or suggestions I should try?

Talk to Mike about a Superchip I plan on getting one for my 5.0 and IzzyEddy purchased one from him and likes it. He will custom program it to your engine and computer code.

Hi Sprocket_X,

Nice to see another Big 6 around!

Yes, we do make the Superchip for many of these vehicles using that 4.9 Big 6 (as we call it here at Performance), and it will do far more for that motor than any other chip, especially something like a Jet unit.

With the Superchip, it will not be generic like Jet & other units are, it will be made *specifically* to match the exact software revision in your individual vehicle's ECU (powertrain computer).

You will see gains of 15-16 horsepower and right at 31 lbs./ft. of torque from the Superchip. Unlike the Jet & other units, the Superchip will give you more horsepower and torque *all* the time, not just at full throttle, but at *all* throttle positions, at every rpm, it's always working. In round numbers, think of the Superchip as a 10%-12% power gainer.

Give us a call at our number listed below and we'll be happy to go over all the details of the Superchip with you if you like. We'll also need to know the computer code of your vehicle, which is easy to find. On the pre-1997 F-150's like yours, open the Driver's door and then look in the front part of the door frame, in the area of the door hinges, and there you should see a small sticker that has 3 letters followed by 1 number printed on it, and that is your computer code. Just so you'll know, we're *not* talking about the sticker on the back of the Driver's door that says "calibration" on it, that's the wrong end. Look in the front door *frame*, where the door hinges are, and you should find your code sticker there. If it's not, there, it may have worn off, etc., over time, so in that case just give us a quick call & we can tell you other ways to locate your computer code over the phone.

Nice to see someone else keeping the 4.9 Big 6 alive. They're great torque-producers, and will respond nicely to some simple bolt-ons. The key to longevity in those 4.9 I-6's is to change their oil *frequently*, at least every 3000 miles, as they do like to accumulate sludge and clog the oil pickup, etc. Change their oil frequently and you can routinely get a 200K mile service life.

Hi S-X,

Ouch, I guess I did sound like a salesman, didn't I?

All kidding aside, I guess I am a bit adament about the differences between something like a Jet unit and the Superchip. The reason for that is simply the difference in function; with Jet and most other chips, they only tune the engine for more power during open loop operation, which is basically only at extremely heavy to full throttle. The rest of the time, there is no gain so they don't help for towing, normal driving, etc. With the Superchip, you've got more horsepower and torque *all* the time, at any throtle position or rpm, while still maintaining strict 50-state emissions certification, and nobody else does that.

The other issue is the "generic" issue, Jet & most others do not program each individual vehicle, instead they make one program compromised to run on all similar vehicles, whereas the Superchip is programmed to precisely match the exact software revision (computer code, as we call it) in each and every individual vehicle, as that provides for full & proper optimization of the ECU's programming/tuning.

Those 2 aspects are major differences in terms of the actual results. This has been commented on many times here by those who have actually used either the Jet, or Hypertech, etc. and then used the Superchip on the same vehicle in a direct comparison. Every time, they've always preferred the Superchip hands down.

The bottom line is, when you have the best product of it's kind in any field, you tend to be enthusiastic about it, and I have to plead fully guilty to that.

Just as an aside, though our staff will be here Friday, I am taking off in a few moments to go pick up our Lightning, and will not be back in until sometime over the weekend. If you want to call, our staff will be here and they can take your order, or you can use our online ordering system here if you like, the link to it is just below in our signature line. If you would prefer to speak with me personally, just give us a call & leave me a message with your name & number, and I'll return your call when I get back in over the weekend.

Enjoy your holiday weekend,
