Question JDM J68 question??

Hello!
I have an '01 Lightning with the mods in my sig. I'm running the J68 chip as JDM has sent me the wrong chip TWICE! When i put in the J68 and 4# pulley, the pinging was terrible. I ended up putting in a "jug" of Torco which i know others use. Problem is that i'm in Arizona (91 Octane with Ethanol/blends/etc) so i need to either run Torco and use and aggressive chip or run a "weak" chip and use the 91. I don't mind the cost of the Torco ($13 per bottle, one bottle per tank to get around 94-95 Octane from 91).

Any thoughts on this? Should i or can i go MORE aggressive with the chip using Torco?

Thanks for any help!

Hi Weedo,

Your truck needs to be tuned for the fuel quality being used, it sounds like a simple problem. 91 octane is not going to support a really aggressive program, especially if it is further reduced in energy content by being a gasahol blend, meaning using ethanol, etc. That lowers the BTU content, the ethanol portion has 30%-50% lower energy content that "straight" gasoline, just to give you a rough idea.

You'll also want to check a couple of things as well, such as making sure both fuel pumps are working, sometimes one of the 2 fuel pumps these Lightnings have will die and it will go lean, but only after significant power gains, one pump is just about enough to keep up in stock trim.

You'll also want to read your plugs to make sure you don't have just 1 or 2 cylinders going lean, as that happens in these 5.4 motors, Lightning and regular F-150's alike.

We generally do not advise dumping in octane boosting agents like that, we prefer having that engine properly tuned for best pump premium available in your area. Almost all octane boosting agents leave a pink to purple reside behind on the spark plugs, O2 sensors, etc. This is up to you of course, if you don't mind blending your fuel have at it, but either way, the truck needs to be tuned for the fuel it is going to be run on.

We also advise using the 2-program Superchip Flip Chip in *any* forced induction motor, so that you have more flexibility and better protection for the engine. That way you can have a full-out performance program, as well as another mode to drop back to if you get a bad tank of gas, or have to drive in inclement weather and don't want all that torque off the line, etc.

The route to more power is not getting "more aggressive" in the program in an area that has as bad fuel quality as you describe. There are plenty of other modifications you can do to raise power as well as make each PSI of boost more effective, etc.

Good luck, & if you need someone to talk to about this, give us a call, our contact info is below.
