Choke at high RPMS?

I installed my flip chip a few weeks ago along with changing my ring and pinion gears and adding limited slip. I have to say the superchip is great.

I pulled an enclosed trailer with about 5500#'s about 700 miles and it was much better than before.

Now, I merged onto the interstate today (no trailer attached) and I guned it off the yield. something I usually don't do. When the tach reached the point it usually shifts (with the superchip) the engine felt like it was choking off, the way my imitation sports car would do at red line. I had to back way off to get it to drop into 2nd. Is this normal and something I'll get used to or should I be concerned.

Thanks,

Tim

Hi Tim,

Most likely you just lifted too soon and didn't allow it to hit it's WOT upshift point. That's what happens with most people who post a note like yours, they're just not used to the raised WOT upshift point of the Superchip and freak out, lifting their foot. It's a natural human response. The engine and transmission are still protected by the rev limiter, so you're ok from that standpoint.

The Superchip will raise the WOT upshift point in many of these vehicles, as it sets the WOT upshift point for quickest acceleration. Sometimes that means raising it by 100-300 rpm, sometimes that means leaving it where it is, and in a few cases, even lowering it a bit, and this varies from one code to the next, and with vehicle configuration.

If you got your Superchip from us, Please give us a call when you get a chance (as our Performance Products documentation instructs when you think you have a problem), and we'll be more than happy to go over this with you in detail. If it's a situation where there is an actual problem requiring an adjustment to the powertrain program, that can be done too.

Even if you got it somewhere else, if you would like someone to talk to about this, please feel free to call us and we'll go over this with you.

The bottom line is, this should be easy to determine if there is a real problem and if so, take care of it for you.

Talk to you soon!

Hello all. I had the same problem. I have a 5.4 supercrew with the chip and it always felt like the shiftpoint was set just beyond the powerband and I would start to loose power just before shifting into the next gear.

The problem was breathing. The stock aircleaner wasn't providing enough air at thse RPMs. The first thing I did was replace my aircleaner with a K&N (stock) and that made an unbelieveable difference. After I thought about it, it was time to change the aircleaner anyway.

Then I did what we call the McElroy Aircleaner Mod. That is where you cut off all but the first 4 inches or so to the cannister that holds the aircleaner. Then take some black door molding and run it around the newly cut area. Looks HiPo Stock and it makes a big difference. BIG! Now the timing is at the end of the powerband it shifts in to the next gear for a jolt of power!

Hi Enterceptor (&TRK),

That's a good point and you're exactly right, the WOT upshift point is optimized for those who are doing something to open up the air intake tract, so they run best if you have either a drop-in low restriction air filter element like the S&B or K&N, etc., also if you have just about any airbox elimination kit, as we refer to all the various Air Force One's, Airaid's, FIPK's, etc.

It can take some getting used to the first couple of times you nail it, and the engine is still protected by it's rev limiter.
