Question California Emissions Package ?

I've posted this in engines forum ang got no reply so I'll try my luck here since this forum led me to ask the question.

I was using the search function (which I missed dearly) to research the code for my chip and found out that my particular code indicated that my truck is equipped with the California Emissions Package.

Does anyone know what makes the California Emissions Package F150s different from non California Emissions trucks?

Is it all in the ECU program or are there different parts on the engine and exhaust?

Also, are California Emissions trucks at a disadvantage when it comes to resonding to mods that improve performance?

I know I ask a lot of questions but if anyone has the answers I'd really like to hear them.

Thanx in advance for your help.

Good question. Although not really part of your question, I THINK, yours will also be lucky enough to have the 4R100 tranny.

Hi LE PEW,

In short, don't worry.

Thankfully, it's not like it was in the 60's, 70's and even into the 80's, where California-spec (or what we would call 50-state) vehicles automatically were at a disadvantage in power both from the factory.

These days, you get the same power from the factory in an F-150 regadless of what state it's emissions is for, if it's a 5.4 it will still be a 260 hp 5.4 F-150, and will still make the same basic power gains from the typical bolt-on modifications, etc.

Yes, the 50-state vehicles do tend to have different software revisions in their ECU's compared to an identical 49-state vehicle, however, that isn't really hurting those owners, they still seem to have roughly the same basic performance at the same weight & configuration. There have been a few LEV owners that have felt their new LEV model F-150 wasn't quite as strong in hotter weather as their previous non-LEV F-150 they just traded in, but that really hasn't been specifically tested for performance-wise in any carefully controlled comparisons to the best of my knowledge. The LEV models in these F-150's are rated at the same power as the non-LEV F-150's from the factory.

Several other states are now using the California emissions standards, and over time, we'll eventually see one 50-state standard, I think.

I'm not aware of any specific mechanical engine parts that are different between 49 and 50-state emissions packages that would affect performance, they use the same basic MAF's, TB's, intakes, exhausts, etc.

There are many California-spec F-150 vehicle owners that have been here over the years, and they are enjoying the same basic results from all the normal types of modifications as the rest of the F-150 owners, so don't worry, you'll be able to have just as much fun with your California-spec truck as the 49-state spec vehicle owners have. If you'd like tio go over any of this in detail, feel free to give us a call.

Have fun!
