Running Lean
Running Lean
hey mike, after putting on headers, a granatelli, and other stuff, i knew it was time to get my chip custom programmed. so i did.....got all excited and went to the track, and it slowed me down! the truck is running way lean now, my gas mileage shot way up and its knocking a little bit around 4500 in 3rd gear. i thought the superchip program was supposed to richen up the mixture, but i dont know if it has.
bottom line is i have spent 400 bucks on a granatelli and 125 on a chip program that actually lost me 3 tenths and 2 mph. what gives? did superchips screw up? is there anything i can do to richen up my mixture? i am about to put in a 180 thermostat...thought maybe that would help

i just went through the same thing lean mixture so i changed out the whole fule system 255lph fuel pump, 24lbs injectors and adjustable fuel reg and that fixed the problem. what happens is when you open up the breathing on these engines the stock injectors start running a 100% dutty cycle and cant keep up i dont think adjusting supper chip is going to help if your injectors are maxed out. Hope this helps
Sup guys... I too am lean...will get A?F # and get back to Mike.
Hey roadrage.. nice set of mods you have there.
Q: what does a Jacobs ignition do for our rides? neal?
Q:Is that a "hypertech power programmer? or a "superchip" but not both.
not a Q: but with those set of performance mods it doesn't seem likely that you would of needed any A/F adjustments.
And were you able to adjust them by the Hypertech?
thanks...
Late..
Jacobs Ignition

Moble 1 synthetic 0w30 oil
Red line atf and rear end lube

Hi Bullitt,
OK, let's go over a few things briefly......................
(Note: I have edited this a bit for clarity)
First, you need to call us if you think you may have a problem related to your program, please. If you do not let us know you have a problem by calling us and identifying yourself, we don't have a clue who you are, and thus really can't do much to help you, and we really do want to help you in any way we can, that's our job. Remember, there are over 20,000 names registered to post on these message boards, far too many for us to remember what real name matches which screen name, so we don't know who "BullittMcQueen" is.
If I knew what your real name is, I'd be happy to call you right away, but there's the rub, because of the use of screen names here, I don't know what your real name is, which puts us both at a standstill...you needing help, and us wanting to help you, but not knowing who you are until you call us, kinda Catch-22-ish. That aside, the policies of F-150 Online require that anything of a nature that is between vendor & customer (Tech Support, like this, or things like pricing, order status, etc.) be discussed privately, off the message boards.
Second, you cannot compare times run on different days, that is one of the most basic facts of drag racing. No 2 days will ever have identical conditions, your power output will never be exactly the same on different days. Things like temperature, humidity, barometric pressure, etc., have a profound effect on ET & trap speeds, and sometimes people are not aware of that. You can easily have a half-second & more difference from one day to the next. The fact that these vehicles are computer controlled makes them just that much more sensitive to atmospheric changes. The only way you can make a valid comparison of that kind is to do a strictly controlled back-to-back procedure, with and without the latest change being evaluated, allowing sufficient time to stabilize powertrain temps between runs, etc., and that has to be done in a short period of time. We like using a 3 run format over 90 minutes, allowing a 30 minute cooldown time between runs. Now in your case, you mention having a bit of detonation (knocking, as you called it) at about 4500 rpm in 3rd gear, which might be indicating a lean condition, and if that is the case, sure, you're probably running slower than what you could be.
Third, in custom programming, it is perfectly normal to sometimes need to make adjustments to the program, assuming this is actually a program issue. Remember, custom means "custom," and that may very well require adjustments to dial it in, which we are happy to do, that is part of doing the custom program for you. No, Superchips didn't "screw up."
You could also have an issue with fuel pump capacity and/or injector capacity, and we can go over all of that with you in detail when you call us, and show you how to determine if you need fuel system upgrades, from fuel pump to injectors.
Speaking of injectors, the 19# injectors that come from the factory on these vehicles (4.2, 4.6 & 5.4) will support roughly about 300 HP @ 80% duty cycle (304 assuming .500 BSFC & stock rail pressure, to be precise) on a 8-cylinder motor, assuming they are clean & in good condition and being supplied with sufficient rail pressure. Pushing them to 100%, you can of course get more out of them, sometimes as much as 340 HP or so, that varies of course. Your truck might be a bit "thirstier," and perhaps exhibit a bit higher BSFC (brake specific fuel consumption), or fuel pump not able to keep up, etc.
The bottom line is, if this vehicle is running lean, that can be due to any number of causes, and the only way we can help you is to let us know by giving us a call to get this started. I know if can sometimes be confusing with regard to when to call us versus when to post something here, as we do try to discuss as much as possible here. Just so you'll know for future reference, things like Tech Support especially, need to be handled over the phone. So please, call us when you get a chance so that we can help you!
If your schedule or situation will not permit you to call us during normal business hours, please just call us whenever you can & leave us a voicemail (our voicemail is on 24 hrs.) with your name & number and a good time to reach you, & we'll be happy to try to accommodate that for you.

Good insights Mike...
I, Gilbert Garcia aka Nodrive55 will call you when I get time.
In the mean time, I,m ok with my lean problem, as I do not get on her that much.
Finally got my #7 & #9 pullies, so I can tell you exactly what I now have and where I would like to be....when I get time.
Thanks...
Late.

Hi NoDrive55,
Yes, by all means, please do call us if you're having a lean issue at current boost levels. We have the data on A/F's with either of those pulleys, the 7 or the 9 being used on the Magnacharger, and can make the adjustments as needed.
Hope all is well with you & look forward to speaking with you again.
