MPH Limiter

I recently got my superchip...and loving it. But i was on the highway the other day and was passing someone and my MPH governor came on at 95 mph....wasn't the superchip suppose to take the governor off?....just wondering?

I have seen here that the speed limiter is removed or raised in most F150's. Seems like you got one that didn't. Mike should be able to let you know if there is something that can be done.
When I first got my Superchip I couldn't be absolutely sure that the speed limiter was removed. I would get up to where it used to cut out and have to back out. I had tha feeling it was removed. Well with my latest mod, it takes far less time (room) to get up there. The speed limiter is definitley gone. I only wish the speedometer went like thirty mph higher, so I could tell how fast I am actually going!

Hi Corupt,

The Superchip removes the top sped limiter in roughly about 98% of these trucks. Every once in awhile, we'll find a new, or a bit of an "oddball" or rare code that uses a different method and takes Superchips longer to get that knocked out, and when that happens, it's always a free update as soon as we have that taken care of.

I would suggest giving us a call & let's go over your vehicle & program & see just what's going on in your case.

Another thing that can happen in 2001 & newer models is that it usually takes 2-4 different drive cycles (separate attempts to exceed that speed) for the ECU in 2001 & newer F-150's and some other FoMoCo vehicles to accept that new instruction and exceed the 95-108 mph top speed limiter, we've seen that many times; what's happening is simply that the new instruction needs to be executed a couple times and then bingo, you're set, the ECU accepts that change. This is due to some changes Ford made starting in the 2001 model year, where for a couple of specific kinds of changes, it can take a couple of times (meaning complete drive cycles, not just letting it slow back down and then speed up again right away) for the ECU to accept certain changes.

Give us a call when you get a chance & we'll be happy to go over this with you.

Just in case you may not be aware, the factory top speed limiters are set to match the various speed ratings of whichever original factory tires came on that vehicle. Please do not try to drive faster than 95-100 mph on your original stock factory tires, as they are not up to it. You're taking a chance of having an explosive blowout at sustained speeds of 95 mph or higher (Sorry, don't mean to sound depressing). If you want to drive 100+ mph when you feel you can do that safely, fine, that's your choice, but please, get better tires first so you don't have that obvious risk staring you in the face each time you want to top it out. Yes, we've all seen people who post here that they ran triple-digit speeds on their factory F-150 tires, but that doesn't make it correct or safe, please be careful in your high-speed running. We want you here with us for a long time.

mike - is this always true? are none of the tires that come on our trucks speedrated for higher than a 100 more or less? one last question...what are Lightning tires speed rated at? thanks

If I remember correctly (it's to cold and snowy to go out and check right now ) my truck came with T rated tires. I think it has a speed rating of something like 108mph. My truck used to shut down before 100mph.
Although I don't like to hear it, Mike is right. My current set up allows this truck to exceede the speed rating of the tires, though I have not driven at a sustained high speed. V or Z rated tires are on the list but at more that two hundred a piece ....
(I keep telling myself) the moral to the story is: if your going to play you've got to pay.

of course i have the messed up truck...naw just kidding...i will give mike a call and see if he can work this out...i just don't know what i am going to do with the chip out...

MPH limiter

I know my top speed limiter is gone. Buried the needle last weekend. I know I hit at least 115 mph (and still accelerating) before I let off. Unfortunately, I never did catch up with the other truck that was leading the way.

Question how do i know?

hey guys,

sorry for the dumb question but...how do i know what my factory tires are rated at? does it say on the tire or on the door jam sticker with the other info? thanks a lot for the info so far.

Well, close enough. Yes, you can find a 108 mph-rated tire on a vehicle that has a TS limiter set a little bit below that, sure, that can easily happen.

And although I cringe at saying this for fear that somebody will assume it's actually safe, the reality is that most of the time you can do a quick run up to speed and then slow right back down and usually be OK if the vehicle can accelerate quick enough to not put a lot of excess heat into the tire in the process, but it's just not worth taking chances.

The issue here is one of running for any length of time, meaning anything more than a quick dash up to speed, and in these heavy trucks, it takes some time to accelerate at over 100 mph, the aero drag is huge.

This bring back memories of my stupid teenager days, when we though nothing of joyriding in somebody's hot-rod with tires from the early & mid-60's on the Autobahn (in Europe) at speeds of 130 mph +. God, were we ever lucky to live thru it, and stupid for having done it!
