chip
chips-I need help
I have a completely stock 2000 5.4 4X4 lariat supercab and would like to buy a chip. How many different types of chips are there? How many manufacturers are there? Is it cheaper to buy them on the internet? Is there anyone in the Toronto area that can tell me a good store to shop at? Are there chips that provide better mileage and performance? I'm new to this site and these questions probably have already been asked and answered. Sorry about that.

Hi Peterr,
Well, if you don't ask, you'll never know, so we're glad you dropped by to check things out, don't worry about that.
Yes, there are chips made by a number of different manufacturers, but only 1 that gives you more power all the time, at any throttle position or rpm, and is also emissions certified, and that is the Superchip. If you take some time to read the posts here in this section, you'll quickly see that almost everyone here prefers the Superchip.
Thee are others, like Hypertech and Jet, and they are both "generic" (meaning only 1 program for all similar vehicles, like for say, all 1998 4.6 F-150's) and only add power during open loop operation, which is basically only at very heavy to full throttle, the rest of the time there is no power gain. There is also Diablo, a product line we also handled for some time, but they do not have emissions certification.
Most of the Canadian F-150 Online members get their Superchips from us, as we offer very nice discounts to F-150 Online participants, we have an online ordering system right here which can be accessed just by clicking on the link in our signature line just below this message, and it helps us to help provide financial support necessary to keep F-150 Online available to everyone free of charge. However, if you prefer dealing with a local dealer where you are, you can certainly do that as well, whatever makes you feel more comfortable.
With regards to the potential for improving your gas mileage, yes, there is a *limited* potential for that to happen with the Superchip, out of all the chips it has the most potential for that in our experience over the years, but don't expect anything earth-shattering in that regard. These are *performance* chips, not gas mileage chips, there really isn't any such thing as a "gas mileage chip" per se.
The potential for better mileage is really just a by-product of our performance tuning for premium gas, and specifically, the increased spark advance used on part-throttle. Your mileage results will depend primarily on how you operate your vehicle, and the quality of fuel being burned. Improvements are generally more apparent on the highway, when cruising, as opposed to when driving in city traffic. You may see 1.0-2.0 better mpg on the highway, again, that will depend on how the vehicle is operated and the fuel quality. I wouldn't buy a performance chip just for the potential mpg gains.
If you'd like to go voer any of this in more detail, please feel free to give us a call, our contact info is just below.
Best of luck whatever you decide, & we hope you'll hang out here with us in your spare time!
