Flip Chip Flip Question

When you flip the switch on the flip chip is it necessary to disconnect the battery to reset everything?

Hi GeneKind,

As Deacon mentiend, no, you do not need to do anything other than shut the engine off long enough to flip the switch.

The only time you would want to do the procedure to clear the ECU is if you were doing instrumented testing, say on a chassis dyno or at the drag strip, etc., to quantify the performance/power differences between the 2 programs in a controlled back-to-back testing situation.

Otherwise, just shut the motor off, flip the switch and you're all set.

Hi GeneK

I would like to add to what others have said...

I do the battery disconnect when i switch programs..in my case i just have 87/92oct program.

Its my understanding if you do disconnect to clear PCM, about 80% of the new program comes in and the rest picked up with accumulated mileage.

Yes, you dont have to do disconnect, just flip switch...but??

Anyhow, thats the way i do it. Sometimes when flipping, ive noticed just a very slight difference in starting(only the first start)...not a problem at all...of course the obvious..going from 92 to 87oct. or 87 to 92..you know..

BTW...when switching oct...i do disconnect, 5 min. wait,(lights on) right at the island...if to busy, i just pull over to side, do same thing. (of course..shut lights off before reconnecting batt.)
I should try the no disconnect, just flip, and see what happens?

Good luck...OT

Sound like a fire waiting to happen!

In most states it is illegal to smoke while at the gas pump and I know for a fact, that you CAN NOT ignite gasoline with a cigarette. If someone is diconnecting and connecting their battery at the pump, there is a chance of a spark occuring and I also know for a fact that you CAN ignite gas with a spark.

Please be careful!

Hi Opie,

Interesting post!

I'm probably one of few people here that will agree that it's very difficult to ignite liquid gasoline with a cigarette. You can sure ignite gasoline *fumes* very easily and get a big explosion, but igniting liquid gasoline just by throwing a lit cigarette into liquid gas is very hard. And for others reading this post, NO, DO NOT TRY THIS AT HOME!! Some of us have working "in the industry," so to speak, and so have had a chance to see this demonstrated under controlled circumstances. DON'T EVER TRY THIS YOURSELF!!

Sparks are a different matter, I agree.
