Are Superchips the same if ordered from someone else?
Are Superchips the same if ordered from someone else?
I am considering ordering a Superchip for my 2001 V6 F150. My brother-in-law receives a discount as he is an engine builder and I can get it slightly cheaper than then on the board (sorry Mike!). But my concern is the ease of having it adjusted for my speedometer error (larger tires) as well as the same performance gains. Is the program for this more $$ than a standard chip? I know this is somewhat of a stupid question, but I am curious. I am looking forward for the torque increase as Mike is totally correct when saying the V6 has none below 2500 rpm. I can hang with my buddies 2001 Chevy with the 4.8 5 speed (even with my larger tires), but I would like to actually pull away from him. Thanks.
Hi dave91GT,
Well, yes and no would I suppose be the most accurate answer.
Yes, the "standard" performance programs that all other dealers have are the same, however, here at Performance Products we have programs that have features nobody else has, features that we have helped to test & develop for more power. In our position as the oldest Superchips distributor in this country, we have worked directly with the engineers at Superchips on these F-150 programs to help develop them, to incorporate the features we want in them based on years of street, track, towing, and everything in between in terms of the types of uses for these vehicles. As we are F-150 performance specialists, we tune more of them than any other company, and so have over the years had an important role in their development, and have programs that nobody else does.
Will you be happy with a Superchip you get somewhere else?
Sure, you probably will!
Will you get the exact same program you would from us?
Maybe. Most of our F-150 programs have features that only we offer, that deliver more power to the wheels. If you have a less common code, then you might get the same program from us.
If you would like to go over this in more detail, talk about the programs we have available, or any aspect of this, please feel free to give us a call, and we can go over all of this with you so you can give it some thought in making your decision.
Good luck!

Dave91gt,
No. Even if the physical chip is the same, the customer service would be different. Not to say that your friend might not deliver, but I think Mike has proven to back his products with excellent service.
I don't currently have a chip but if I do, the price shopping won't take place. I already know a good source.
Mike,
Since I'm busy sucking up anyway, a quick question....
Since there are more and more tuners doing custom burns, I was curious how this is handled by the Superchips Corporate types. Does a tuner have to release Superchips from any liability due to potential damage, etc. or do they approve the code to be burned on a Superchips ROM, yet let you retain your unique code specifics?
Before anyone asks, I'm not trying to say Mike or anyone else is burning "ragged edge grenade" chips. I'm just curious, as it would seem that if someone did grenade an engine with a chip, the finger would quickly point to the company that has their name on it.

What Superchips had to say about this....
Let's hope this stays here and doesn't get deleted... because its the truth --- I called Superchips and asked them several questions and was enlightened about many things.
First, a chip "tuner" is not a tuner. They simply connect to the Superchips BBS, download a code and click button on a piece of software which programs. All modem programmers have access to the same exact codes, according to several LARGE dealers that I've talked to (and one of Superchips largest distributors). The programmer doesn't have the ability to make changes with his programmer. Its simply an EPROM programmer that plugs into a computer that programs code, unmodified, from Superchips.
Second, I specifically asked them if what Mike said about having unique code is the truth. I was told, flat out, "no". They told me that the only difference from one modem dealer to another is experience knowing which codes (that all modem dealers have access to) have worked well for their customers. They told me that ANY dealer who does a lot of chips will know pretty quickly which codes work well and if they have any doubts Superchips will tell them. Furthermore, Superchips doesn't play favorites and makes all enhancements and custom codes available to all dealers.
I mentioned Mike by name just to make sure they would be able to give me all the facts about his situation. I was told that Mike does not have programs that others do not have.
I was told by them that the important thing to consider with any Superchips dealer is service and their guarantee, not claims of superior code.

That is a modem dealer. If you have the money you can do that.
What I am speaking of is someone changing the code. Don't tell me it can't be done, I have done it! I have never burned a chip, but I have programmed a device that works the same. Ford even sold a programmer with software and a laptop called the EPEC.
I can assume that if I can buy the equipment (or in this case help a friend who did) that just about anyone can do it with a little bit of research.
Didn't mean to start any troubles for you Mike, just curious if you were allowed to burn your code on a Superchips chip.

mbalmoral,
Funny that this would be your first post. Usually these types of situations, where someone is basically calling us a liar, are fomented by other dealers or someone put up to it by another dealer. Regardless of who you are or what your actual reasons for direclty calling our integrity into question are, it requires an immediate and direct response, and that is exactly what you're going to get, my friend.
*Nobody* else has a clue as to the nature of our relationship with Superchips other than myself and a couple of people within Superchips that you would never know or have access to, unless perhaps you are another dealer. Even that doesn't matter in this regard, as no other dealer or distributor of any size would ever have a clue as to what we have or don't have, that's absolute malarky, all they know is what *they* have.
Nobody at Superchips that you could ever get access to will ever tell you anything about the nature of our relationship or what we have them do, as it's nobody's *business* except ours, assuming you could actually get access to anyone who would actually know.
Some of what you posted is indeed correct: any "modem dealer" can log onto their BBS, and get any of their *standard* programs. However, *nobody* else in this country can get any of *our* programs that differ from Superchips "standard" performance programs, that is a plain and simple fact. It is also fact that we contribute quite a bit to the process of what goes into even the "standard" performance programs available for these vehicles.
It is also a fact that there are other platform-specific tuners in this country, for other vehicle types, that have programs made with specific features or differences based on their detailed knowledge of a specific platform, that only *they* have. You would never be able to get any information about what they have, either, as once again, it's none of your business, it's not *your* relationship, and thus you will never be told any of that kind of information. Heck, *we* wouldn't be told that kind of information from Superchips about what another platform-specific tuner may have, as is only ethical and appropriate.
No other dealer or distributor could possibly have any information on what programs we have, so citing them is completely immaterial. Nobody at Superchips that would actually have any knowledge of what we have done in our programs that differ from their "standard" performance programs would ever tell you or anyone else besides us anytihng about that.
I stand by exactly what I said, as those are the *facts*, and anyone claiming otherwise simply doesn't know, or perhaps has an ulterior motive.
This will be my last post on this subject, as I'm not going to be dragged into some silly ongoing debate. The fact is, nobody else could ever possibly have this knowledge aside from us here at Performance, this is very cut and dried; nobody other than us here at Performance could ever possibly know what we have here in the way of programs, and for anyone to claim otherwise is dead wrong.
If you, mbalmoral, would like to speak with me personally about this, our contact info is below, I'll be *more* than happy to take your call.
