Question Difference in SUPERCHIP / FLIP CHIP ????

what is the difference between a Superchip and a Superchip Flip Chip?

I am looking at picking up a Superchip for my 2000 F150 5.4L and want to make sure that I am getting the right one. Do they offer different performance upgrades? Can someone explain what each are used for? Thanks

yo

navy,

hey, i will give you the basic difference...but i am sure mike will chime in and tell you every detail. think of a flip chip as two superchips in one. when you buy a superchip it is programed for premium fuel, this differs from place to place but where i am it is 91 octane. a flip chip would give you the option of running 87 octane as well. you will have a switch, and when you want the most performance you can get out of your truck, you can fill her up with premium and flip the switch to the premium setting. when you want to save some gas money, you can fill her with 87 and flip the switch back. but keep in mind that a flip chip is more money. you have to figure out what is best for you. for me, it was just getting a superchip and running premium fuel all the time. just my .02.

Hi Navy Chief,

LBC covered a lot of good ground in his response.

The 2-program Superchip Flip Chip has 2 different EEPROM's internally, and a 2-position toggle switch externally, for those who require 2 different programs. That would be used for things like a dual octane configuration, where we have a pair of performance programs; one being our normal program for premium gas (the same program that is in the standard single program Superchip), and then another program to allow operation on 87 octane when desired. The power gain on the 87 octane program is of course small, but you also have all the other benefits, improved shifting, delays & retards removed, TS limiter pulled, etc.

The Flip Chip is also used when custom programming is needed (that's something we do here at Performance, it's not a requirement, it's just the best financial deal when custom programming is required) , because the manufacturer includes the cost of custom programming in it's price.

The standard single-program Superchip can contain any program the Flip Chip can, it's just limited to 1 program.

There is no inherent difference in performance between the 2 different types of Superchips, it's just a matter of whether you want 1 or 2 programs, basically. Sometimes people will have us set up a Flip Chip with our normal performance program for premium gas on one side, and then another more aggresive program for say, 100 octane unleaded racing gas on the other side.

Unless you're going to install modifications that require custom programming (aftermarket mass airflow meter, supercharger, nitrous oxide, ported cylinder heads, gear ratio changes, etc.), or use ultra-high octane racing gas, you'll get all the performance everyone else is getting with their Superchips using the standard single-program Superchip. And, it can even be updated in the future should you ever do mods that require custom programming, for a small custom programming fee.

If you'd like to go over this in more detail, please feel free to give us a call at our number listed below.

Hi Ex91,

See my response to this same question in the first thread you posted it in, I have gone over that in some detail there for you.
