superchip controler?
i think i was waching crank N crome the other day and they showed a new product from superchip . like the hypertech controler but from superchip... so question , how much ? and is it like the hypertech were it onley works at open loop ? or does it work just like the normal superchips but its programable???? thanx
Hi N1,
Actually, that was an older show that was taped some time ago, if memory serves. They talked about our Superchips Micro Tuner for the GM trucks & performance cars, and Superchips Chief Engineer was there, if it's the Crank & Chrome program I'm remembering.
No such Superchips device exists for the F-150.
However, we did just release the Superchips Micro Tuner for the Ford Powerstroke Diesel, and it is still code-specific and tunes the engine to add power all the time, in both open and closed loop operation. In fact, it's already in our online ordering system here, the link to which is just below in our signature line. I didn't see the show, but it's possible that another show aired that announced the new Superchips Micro Tuner for the Ford Powerstroke diesel, I just haven't seen it yet or looked at their TV show schedule lately.
The Micro Tuner for the Powerstroke diesel has 2 programs, both the emissions certified program adding 60 horsepower (what we call our "CARB" program), and an Offroad program adding 80 horsepower, to choose from. When connected to the vehicle, it automatically "reads" the ECU to determine it's software revision, then it automatically uploads the matching Superchips performance program, transparently, in the background. This is revolutionary in this industry, having just 1 unit that will program any Powerstroke diesel yet still be code-specific. Offering not just 1, bit 2 different performance programs for each and every Powerstroke diesel as well is icing on the cake.

Don't hold your breath, it won't be anytime soon, or in the near future. It's a long-term project that is nowhere near the end of the tunnel. I don't see it happening for quite awhile yet, as it's not needed to deliver a performance program to the ECU, the J3 connector is still there. As long as that is the case, it probably won't be released due to it's added expense, it's going to be much more expensive than a chip due to it's considerable added complexity.
Howdy Mike,
This tuner is being discussed over at Ford Diesel in one thread. It seems to be drawing a lot of interest. The old PPIII tuner just wouldn't perform with the chips and everyone is wondering if the SC tuner will be the same. So for it seems to be a totally different animal. The only negative I've seen is that it doesn't seem to work well with a couple of codes. But we have also learned that the trucks with that code doesn't perform near as well as trucks with other codes. So maybe a reflash would correct this.
My questions are:
1. Does it put out as much power as a chip of the same rating?
2. What are the exhaust temps?
3. How do you switch between programs?
4. Will it remove the top speed limiter?
5. Can you set it for different tire sizes?
6. Does it firm up the trasmission shifts like a chip?
Price wise, you've got the guy over there beat by about $100. If it pans out, I know where I'll be getting mine!

Hi Conocoan,
Yes, we've got a very ncie price on our Superchips Micro Tuner for the Ford Powerstroke diesel.
The tuning is not changed at all from the chips, the tuning R&D has been done long ago, so there is no difference in the performance or power gains in either of the 2 programs in the Micro Tuner as compared to the regular Superchip module for the same computer codes.
The same couple of codes that are a dog from the factory don't gain quite as much power with either the Superchip or the Micro Tuner, there is a solid 20 horsepower difference. And in either case, as you suspected, that is easily cured by a reflash to the latest factory code at a dealership. The Micro Tuner automatically reads the ECU's code, and then automatically uploads the exact same code-matched performance program you would get in the Superchip module. So the cure is a simple reflash by the dealership.
How you select between programs is simply which of the 2 programs you choose to upload. You have to upload the program change, it takes about 6 minutes from start to finish.
We'll be happy to pass along our F-150 Online discount to those over at Ford-Diesel.com, they'll just have to come here to get it. They can take advantage of our online ordering system here on F-150 Online, by just clicking on the link below in our signature line, or clicking on our banner ad when it pops up in rotation, and that will take you right there.
The EGT's are all the same, as the tuning is exactly the same. Top speed limiter is removed on all the same units that the Superchip module removes it on, once again, the tuning hasn't changed. Different tire sizes have to be accomodated by sending the unit in for that change, due to the fact that not all tires of the same size and up actually having the same circumference, especially in these size ranges with the Super Duty's. To do that correclty, we have to get the revs per mile spec on each tire model individually from the manufacturer to effect a truly accurate speedo correction. We could get close enough for most people by just doing it generally in the unit, but we don't like doing things like that, we want the speedo, odo, etc. to be dead-nuts on. The Super Duty vehicles tend to have larger tires, and it's in those ranges that we see more variance in sizing. This was something we all agonized over, and decided in favor of accuracy.
By the way, nice to see you around these parts once again!

That's never been mentioned by any of the vendors over there. I got the feeling that this thing was completely new. Your comment changes everything! I know a lot of guys who have bought a chip and had it either re-flashed up or down in power. Now you get both chips for the price of one.
Man, I just don't see a downside here. If the 80 hp mode is too hot to pull with "I" can drop back to 60 hp without sending my chip in. I like it. And if I need to take the truck in for service I can just down load the program and re-loaded it when I get the truck back. Or am I wrong on that one?

As always, thanks for the help. I knew I could get the real deal over here!
P.S. I'll be sending you my old chip to re-flash to fit my father-in-laws truck. 62 yrs old with a chipped F-150. Can't beat that!

Hi Conocoan,
We've done much R&D work and provided a lot of input to Superchips in their decisions regarding which products and what types of programs to make for a lot of these Ford vehicles over the years, that's one of the reasons why we have knowledge of that manufacturer's products that nobody else does. We're also further up in the food chain, so to speak, and have a much closer relationship with the manufacturer, so over the years it's only natural that we have gained experience & detailed program knowledge that few, if any besides the manufacturer and us, have.
No, the tuning has not changed, there's nothing new in that regard other than including all the latest 2002 codes. Heck, Superchips is not going to throw away 7 years of solid Powerstroke programming R&D.
There are 2 basic things that are new about this unit, one is the type of device; this is just a new way of delivering the performance programs to the ECU in the Powerstroke Diesel, the tuning is the same, it's always been great. The other real new concept is that you no longer have to know your vehicle's computer code for the Powerstroke diesel, just the one model of Micro Tuner will tune any PSD. It contains all the various codes and automatically reads each vehicle's ECU software revision and then automatically uploads the code-matching performance program. *That* is a very new concept, that has never been done before. It means that you still get the same great code-specific Superchips tuning, but you don't need to know the code, that is all transparent to the end user, so it can be sold, stocked and installed "generically," but there's nothing generic about the tuning.
You have the correct understanding, you get 2 chips (actually 2 different performance programs) in that same unit, just as you described. You can change programs in about 6 minutes, very convenient, exactly correct.
I agree with you, there is no downside, but then that's easy for us to say since we sell them.
