Installed K & N, next is the Superchips....
Today I installed the K & N FIPK. It took me about an hour or so. I was a little cocerned whether or not it would be too loud, however I was pleasantly surprised that it sounds as quiet as the stock set up with normal driving and idle. Only when I punch it, I think it might be a tad louder. Hard to tell over the Magna flow cat back exhaust! Anyway, I think it runs a little smoother now than it did before. It picks up smoother and quicker when the transmission shift it seems. Now, I am anxious to install the chip! So it takes awhile before I will feel the full effect of the chip? I've been reading a lot of posts about how the ECU adapts to modifications and how the driver drives the truck. Is this true for the intake system too I wonder? If I step on the gas more often, will my truck "learn" to respond quicker and give me more performance? How about if I drive like my Grandma, will my truck not have as much power?
Hi Violator,
Congratulations on your FIPK installation. They don't add any appreciable amount of noise. You only hear a bit of "intake moan" when you really get into the throttle, and even then it's just the sound of the motor taking in more air freely, and is a desirable sound, it's never obtrusive.
The Superchip will take effect basically right away if installed correctly, which includes clearing the ECU, you'll get about 75%-80% in the first 50 miles. All of that information is covered in our supplemental Performance Products documentation that we send out with every Superchip we ship here at Performance.
To get the full 100% of what the Superchip will ultimately deliver, that takes about 350-500 miles, as the fuel trim makes it's adjustment as part of adaptive strategy. It just feels like it gets a bit stronger to the driver as he/she drives the next 500 or so miles after installation.
2001 & newer F-150's will take a bit longer for certain changes to be picked up by the ECU; for example, we've seen a few cases where the top speed limiter was still present the first time or two that the driver tried to exceed 98 mph, but from the 2nd or 3rd time on, the ECU picked up the change and then the limiter is gone. It just takes an extra drive cycle or two, in other words, in some cases with the newest vehicles. That also applies to fuel mileage gains, if achieved, it can take as long as 2000 miles to see the final mielage results on the newer vehicles.
All in all, just install the Superchip according to our documentation, and you'll start feeling the effects very quickly; it doesn't take hundreds of miles to start feeling the additional power, get the improved shifting, removal of the various delays & retards, etc., it just takes a tank or two to gte the full 100% from it, that's all.
Yes, you can affect adaptive strategy by how the vehicle is driven. If the vehicle s driven conservatively most of the time, as most of us tend to do with our daily drivers back and forth to work all week, you can lose about 2% of your power, a very small amount and not really enough for most people to be abel to detect in a 2-ton+ truck. It's not much, but this is why some people will clear the ECU when they go to the drag strip, for example, to clear out the adaptive strategy adjustments & begin them from scratch. If the vehicle has been driven conservatively much of the time, that can get you another tenth or two at the strip (meaning reduce your 1/4 mile ET by 1-2 tenths of a second).
If you'd like to go over this in detail, please feel free to give us a quick call.
