Question nitrous

I just got off the holley nos sight and saw a nos dry system is coming out for the 5.4 & 4.6 motors part #05156.This could be an inexpensive alternitive for us (me) who cant afford a supercharger.I already have a superchip and am wondering if I would have to reburn it to use nos and if my 5.4 would hold up with a 75 or 150 shot? Also how expensive is nitrous to refill. Thanks.

Hi watsot,

You could use nitrous on your 5.4, you will have to have a custom program done in a dual-program Superchip for it. You have to be very careul using a dry nitrous kit, as there is no fuel being added by the kit, so that will have to be done by a custom programmed Flip Chip, and then only up to the capacity of your injectors, which are 19# units. If this is a true dry kit, with no method of augmenting fuel delivery, you're not going to be able to use very much nitrous in a 5.4 motor, maybe a 50 hp shot is about all.

We generally do not recommend using dry kits, we recommend using wet nitrous kits, but as long as you're careful and stay within sane limits, either can certainly work well.

First, you cannot use a standard single-program Superchip, you will have to have a 2-program Superchip Flip Chip. In fact, the hotrodders spraying nitrous oxide were the very people the Flip Chip was originally designed for years ago, that was it's first use.

You have to have 1 program for use when spraying the nitrous oxide, to pull timing out and add more fuel in. Then you need another program to run for the rest of the time, for normal dirving when you're not spraying the nitrous oxide.

Keep in mind that these F-150 motors have 19# injectors on them, which are good for 304 hp (@ 80% duty cycle) on an 8-cylinder engine. So for example, on a bone-stock 5.4 motor, with no other modifications, you can run about a 50 horsepower shot of dry nitrous, you can't run a 75, 100, or 150 hp shot unless you had a "wet" kit.

For the money you will spend buying that dry nitrous oxide kit, you can get that much more power *all* the time making other modifications. If it were a "wet" nitrous kit, then you'd have more flexibility, and could run a larger shot from a fuel standpoint, though the 5.4 motor you don't want to give it more than a 75-100 hp shot at most anyway, assuming you have adequate fuel available for that much nitrous.

If you'd like to go over this in more detail, and see just what can be done, some options, etc., feel free to give us a call.
