Tranny upgrades with SuperChip
I'm looking to enhance the tranny on my '01 2X4 SuperCrew. Current mods are the Volant intake, Gibson SweptSide catback, and SuperChip. She also has the full Hotchkis Performance handling/lowering kit.
The trans is the 4R70W. I'm definitely switching to full synthetic fluid (either Amsoil or Redline - Mercon V spec) and the larger B&M tranny pan with additional 3 quart fluid capacity. My goal is for increased reliability and for quick, tight shifts without harshness or unnecessary "neck-snapping" - the "spousal acceptance factor" must be taken into account...gotta be smooth.
At any rate, I'm also considering a shift kit and the Sonnax valves. How will these affect the shifts with the (standard) SuperChip on duty? Which kit will best meet my goal? Which setting? Valves or no valves? Any other things I should consider?

Hi Sandman,
With the 4R70W transmission used in conjunction with the Superchip, in your situation, we suggest using the Transgo shift kit, and install it on it's lightest setting. They have 3 levels of firmness, Police/Taxi, Street/Strip, and then I forget the last level. I have personally run that combination in a couple of my Fords, teh last one a Lincoln Mark 8, and it worked very well. The light-throttle shifts were still very tolerable, smooth but quick, and will not upset the wife. Then as you get more and more into the throttle, it will get progressively firmer, so that by WOT (wide-open throttle), it will chirp the tires on the 1-2 nicely. You can still drive it in inclement weather, snow, etc., but it will give you a nice snappy upshift at heavier throttle openings. It's a very nice combination I think both you and your family be well pleased with.
You don't need to change anything else, and I wouldn't, if being able to drive on snow and keeping the rest of the family happy are important.
Good luck!
