Question My Superchip

I have had a Superchip in my F-150 for several thousand miles.
I followed all the proper procedures for putting it in but I am still
not satisified with. In the low RPM's sometimes in kind of "clunks"
into gear. All I can tell that my chip does is make the shifts firmer. I took the chip out about 2 weeks ago and I am enjoying the ride better now. I know that Superchips is the best or it would not have the rave reviews that it has. I know about using the best gas and all the proper procedures for putting the chip in my truck like disconnecting the battery and all that. I ran 93 octane gas from Texaco. With the chip out, the vehicle feels as though the acceleration is just as good, just the shifts are not as firm. Could it be that my chip needs to be fine tuned as far as the air/fuel mixture? I ordered my chip straight from Superchips and not a distributer. I had to consult the internet on proper installation.
Anyone else had any experience wher there chip had to be "fine
tuned"? I know it want turn a 2 ton vehicle into a rocket, but I feel that it would do better than it does.

Hi blueflare4.2,

Actually, buying it from Superchips directly costs you a bit more money, but more importantly, you also don't get our Performance Products F-150-specific documentation, which explains to you what is really required to get the best impact of the Superchip. Bits and pieces are posted all over the Internet on message boards in discussion threads, but that doesn't give you the overall picture or facts like you need.

The reality is that it's doubtful that your code needs to be "fine-tuned" with regard to engine tuning, and your shift characteristic that you describe is not normal, just from looking at the words you have typed, though without having access to the vehicle, I really can't tell you for certain. It sounds like you have a marginal transmission sensor, which doesn't act up on the ultra-conservative factory program, but once the Superchip is installed, in effect, the sensor causes too much line pressure on light-throttle low-speed shifts. Rare, but we've seen that happen from time to time, so that could be what's happening in this case. That can easily be adjusted out of there for you to compensate.

I can tell you is that there is no question that the Superchip will add nice power gains to that 4.2 V-6 if it is installed properly and the correct fuel quality is used. On the 4.2's the effect of the Superchip is noticeable, as they are very weak below 2500 rpm, and the Superchip makes a noticeable improvement in that aspect on all 4.2 V-6 F-150's, in addition to all other aspects of performance. Many 4.2 V-6 owners here are using the Superchip, and are very happy with it, and that is one areas that almost all of them immediately notice and enjoy, the improved power where it's really weak, below 2500 rpm, in addition to better performance all around.

Because you purchased it directly from Superchips, that is who you will have to address any issues with, that is the only way to address this, go to who you bought it from.

All in all, given the sheer numbers of 4.2 V-6 F-150 owners with every computer code under the sun and how happy they are, combined with ours & numerous other accelertion tests showing clear improvements, it sounds like you may have either used incorrect before & after procedures which have caused the changes to happen gradually over hundreds of miles, or you just have too high an expectation, that cannot be deetermined with certainty at this point.

What the vehicle feels like as a result of installing the Superchip is simply like you have picked up about 10%-12% more motor under the hood, which is a great bargain for the cost, but still will never make a "big" difference in a 2 ton+ pickup truck, of course. It is the single best "bang-for-the-buck" performance enhancer you can install on that vehicle, as nothing else will improve performance more for the same or less money.

Just give Superchips a call and speak to them about this, since you bought it directly from them.

Good luck!

That is exactly what it feels like. Too much line pressure on
light throttle low speed(or low RPM) shifts. Can Superchips adjust this for me or would I have to buy another chip from a distributor?
Also, with reguard to low end response below 2500 RPM, I can tell no differance between the chip in and then pulling it out. This is after allowing the CPU to adjust to the chip in or chip out. I have read everything and also understand all the aspects of letting the CPU reset and the proper break-in period after you put the chip back in. You are the one who straightened me out on that as well as reading other materials on the subject. I would say Superchips makes a fine product. There is to much positive feedback on the product they produce. By the way, my pick-up only has 35,000 miles on it and I have never had any problem with the vehicle at all.

I believe the Superchip is a fine product also. I'm sorry to hear that it's not working the way you would like.

I have to admit that my expectations of a chip may have been too high at first. I knoticed gains. It was not earth shattering. I was not dissapointed though. You see before I put the chip in I had checked the prices for other go fast parts. I saw tons I would like to have. A supercharger would be awsome. It would make my truck fly. Yes, but at the tune of about $2200 plus installation. I would be into it for about $4500.

There are all sorts of different things we can add to our trucks to make them do what we want. The more money we got, the closer we can get to what we want.

Maybe you will hear from some other V6 owners here. Check out the V6 boards.

Whatever happends I hope you get your situation straightened out and can enjoy your Superchip.

Good luck.
Tom

Hi Blueflare,

No my friend, you certainly don't have to buy another chip, absolutely not, that's no way to treat a customer! That shift characteristic is something we can usually adjust to compensate for a marginal sensor. Every once in awhile, as I was mentioning before, we'll see a vehicle that has a marginal transmission sensor, and will exhibit that kind of characteristic with the Superhcip installed, so that should be adjustable, if I'm understanding your complaint correctly, and I think I am.

Superchips should be happy to take care of this for you for no charge other than return shipping, but in all honesty, I cannot speak for them in this, that will be between you and them.

Here's what I suggest: give Superchips a call & let them know what you are experiencing with this shift issue, and ask them to make this adjustment for you. Make sure you get the exact name of who you speak with each time you speak with somebody down there. Also, keep in mind that they will be closed from December 22nd until the first Monday in January. They should be willing to take care of that for you. If they will not attempt to adjust that shift characteristic for you (and make sure you get the names, times & dates of any conversations with them in case we have to go back to them ourselves), etc. then you call me.

not the chip

with 3.08 gears it is going to take a whole lot of power to get the truck up to speed. The chip is making power but the gears are similar to starting the truck 2nd and then shifting to 4th. The power of the chip and engine can not be felt when the drivetrain limits the output. I would sudject looking into gear ratios to find a better use of the engine power.
