Supper Chip, do I have one?

I just bought a 1999 F150 4x4 W/ 5.4, Auto Trans from a dealer, They knew nothing as far as the truck goes, Is there a way of telling what i have?
Are the chips marked in anyway? It seems to be pretty stock.
We tow a 19ft boat at times and do off roading in the back parts of Death Valley etc. nothing real aggressive. Should i leave it alone?
My last truck was a 72 GMC 4X4 350 4 speed w/ pos rear end and was very at home in the rough, will I still be happy. All I know of the new truck is that it most likely has a 9.75 rear end. Can anyone shead any light?

Hi scuze,

Welcome to F-150 Online!

I don't think you have a Superchip. If you did you'd probably know it, as it would most likely be pinging (detonating) running on 87 octane regular gas, as the Superchip tunes the engine specifically for premium gas. Of course, if you've been running premium gas anyway, you can throw that thoery out the window!

You can always double-check this yourself by looking on the back of your ECU, which is located on the passenger side of your vehicle, inside the cabin and just above the passenger's kick panel. The ECU (that's your powertrain computer by the way) is a rectangular-shaped aluminum box, and is held against it's mounting bracket by a small black plastic pressure clip. If you have a Superchip, you will see it right there on the back of the computer, it will be a rectangular shaped blue module that has "Superchips" stamped into the back of it, you can't miss it if you have one.

As far as whether you should "leave it alone", I'm, not sure what you mean. If you mean, "should you do modifications to improve power & performance", that is really a question that only you can answer, based on how you feel about how your vehicle runs & performs. You can certainly do any number of nice modifications and still retain full towing & reliability as well as daily driver & offroad capabilities, if that is what you're wondering.

If you are perfectly satisfied with how it is right now, then you can skip doing any modifications like you see us talking about here and just enjoy the vehicle in stock factory trim (wait, did *I* say that?!?) Ultimately, you should do whatever makes you the happiest. Some people don't modify tire pressure in these trucks, and some people will turn them into drag strip monsters, and everything in between, and it's all fine, just whatever the vehicle owner wants from his or her vehicle.

As long as your vehicle does what you want it to in a manner that pleases you, that's all that matters. If you decide you want more performance at some point with a Superchip or any other type of performance part, we're always around to answer questions & provide the parts, if needed.

Best of luck with your truck, & we hope you'll hang out here with the rest of us on F-150 Online. It's a great place to learn more about these vehicles, and there are a lot of nice people here you'll enjoy meeting.
