alternative to chip

hey is there anything made for the fords like the chev makes.. my buddy just ordered a controle modual that he plugs into the computer for his trans am and he can adjust things like timing, fuel mixture ect.. this seams like a much better idea than a chip as you can change your settings in a instant.

Whenever I hear Trans-Am I think of Somkey and The Bandit for some reason.

Hi StirCrazy,

Properly optimized powertrain programming is both a science and an art, and one that will never be so easy as to just buy some canned package that allows complete & unlimited control over all the various parameters that control all the numerous functions of the powertrain that are controlled by the ECU & it's program.

There are a couple of canned packages for a few Chevies that are very simplistic & extremely limited, but that's about it. The problem with any package like that is that easily 90+% of the people driving on the road today have absolutely no idea what parameters control what functions in the hex code of any powertrain program, or know anything about what those parameters need to be for openers, which makes those kinds of tools a great recipe for disaster.

What your friend got for his T/A only lets you make very limited changes, and even those are limited to only within pre-set tightly controlled parameters. This is exactly because the developers *know* just how dangerous that can be and how quickly an entire powertrain can be ruined, and will never control anywhere near as many functions or be anywhere near as effective, thorough, or safe as a Superchip.

In adition, the very few & extremely limited packages that are available for those GM's are not cheaper than a properly programmed performance chip, so there is no financial savings.

There are no "shortcuts" to proper, safe & knowledgeable powertrain programming, as if there were, the automakers, supercharger manufacturers, and so many other aftermarket parts & equipment manufacturers wouldn't be coming to Superchips for their tuning needs as they do and have been doing for the better part of 2 decades now, since 1983.

I'm glad your friend is happy, and I hope that works out well for him!
