Chipped 4.2 gas milage report
Chipped 4.2 gas milage report
I'm pleased to say the least. I was getting 13.5 city and about 18 highway. Since I put in the Superchip, did the airbox mod, and exhaust, the milage in town has increased to about 15.5 city and 20 highway. If anything I drove it harder on these first few tanks of gas than I usually do, so the increase is real. I drive it like I stole it in the city, and cruise at 80+ on the highway.

Hi Mitch,
OK, your city mileage increased by 2.0 mpg (WOW!), which is a 14.81% increase, and your highway mileage went up by the same 2.0 mpg to arrive at 20 mpg, which is an 11.11% increase over the previous 18 mpg. Any F-150 cracking 20 mpg is doing very well indeed!
Very interesting results, as normally we see that highway mileage usually increases more than city mileage with those modifications.
Mitch, can you share with us what brand of premium gas you're using in your area there in Arizona? I may have asked that before but forgotten, that would be nice info to have so others will know, as it obviously has a nice high energy content.
Thanks for your post & congratulations on your results!

Mike,
Most of the time I fill up at mobile or texaco in my town (Flagstaff). The highest octane I can find is 91, so that's what I run. When I go to Phoenix or Tucson I usually make an effort to fill up at the Costco (wherehouse store with discount gas) because it's about $.20 cheaper per gallon than the regular stations. It's still 91 octane. I haven't filled up at the costco since I put the chip in. I can find 92 octane elsewhere in Tucson, so I'll try it after I move there in December.
There are also retailers in Tucson offering the Trick racing fuel, like 101 octane, for about $4.00 per gallon. I used to run the Trick gas blended with 92 octane in my 300 ZX Turbo on race night.
Do you have a chip available for my 87 Bronco? I converted it to mass air using the FMS M9000-T50 kit. I'm thinking that if it made this much difference in the F-150 the Bronco might benefit from one as well. I'm not sure what computer is in there. I'll look the next time I go to my parents house, where it's currently stored.
Thanks,
Mitch

Mike,
I found that the chevron near my house (used to be a Shell) has 92 octane instead of 91. What gas companies are good, and which should I avoid? I remember seeing a list somewhare, but I can't find it.
Thanks,
Mitch

Hi Mitch,
OK. thanks for sharing that info in what fuels you're burning.
Yes, by all means, give that Chevron 92 octane a try, as out in the western states, Chevron is about as good a fuel as you can get from an energy content standpoint, which is good for both performance & mileage.
Usually (not always, but usually) what you get from Costco, Sam's, etc. is a cheaper fuel because it's a cheaper fuel.
All kidding aside, I mean a lesser fuel with a lower energy content, many times they're just buying on the open spot-market, so you have no idea what you're really getting from a Costco, etc. Sometimes people have gotten lucky and had very good results from Costco, but it's a real hit or miss proposition. I'll spend more to buy a better fuel, because it usually pays to.
In general, we like Texaco, Amoco & here in the East Citgo is doing a great job as well. Shell does well in the East, but not out West. Out West is the only place where another fuel can be what we feel is consistently better than Texaco, our traditional favorite, and that is Chevron.
Since you have access to Chevron in a 92 octane, that is what I'd use.
Good luck!
