Superchip and shifting rpms

mike and others,
after plenty of races and runs at the track with my truck and the superchip, i got to thinking about the rpms that it shifts at...if i remember right, the superchip is programmed for the optimum shifting pattern and optimum 1/4 times (or so you would think). it shifts right at 5000 or 5200 when i let the truck shift by itself...however, after seeing several friends manual shift theirs up to about 5500, i thought maybe this might be a better shifting point, so my question is, is the superchip programmed to be the BEST shifting points? or can you get it programmed up to 5500 or so.......to everyone, what have you found to be the best shifting points in your track runs or races?

Cool

I have a custom flip chip and on the race side, I am shifting out of first at 5200 soon to be readjusted to 5400. I am out of 2nd at 5400 and through the traps in the 1/4 at around 4300 in third. I am very happy with these shift points and have run some pretty good times with this set up. Hope this helps.

Hi BMcQ,

The best WOT (wide-open throttle) upshift point depends somewhat on the configuration of the vehicle, and of course what modifications have been done.

When you have an F-150 with an airbox kit & a cat-back exhaust, then it can make use of a 5200 to perhaps as much as a 5400 rpm WOT upshift point. However, you won't be able to make it turn quicker ET's by manually shifting it at 5500-5600 rpm, at that point you're on your way down the power curve. You also have to think about where you land in the next gear as well.

Generally speaking, the best WOT upshift points in the lighter F-150's with typical bolt-ons are in the 5200-5400 rpm range, and for heavier trucks, or those with stock intake & exhaust, about 4900-5000 rpm is good. IF a supercharger is present, then we can make use of a 5600 rpm upshift point if the vehicle owner wants to take it that high, I like 5400 rpm a bit better, as it's easier on the motor with a blower.

Another point is that these factory tachs cannot be depended on for that kind of accuracy, they are very cheap electronic units that vary substantially in their accuracy, especially when accelerating hard.

If you'd like to give us a call, I'll be happy to go over your exact configuration with you & determine what your best upshift point is going to be for quickest acceleration, and determine if any adjustments should be made.
