Hi Signmaster,

I just laugh when I see those dyno plots. No "chip & filtered" Lighting has ever put out an honest 362 horsepower to the wheels, never happened, not once. Sure, a Dynojet will show those numbers, heck, they'll show 330 hp to the wheels on a bone stock Lighting, but it's way off.

A '99 or '00 Lightning that is actually making it's 360 hp rating SAE Net stock at the flywheel (there are very few that ever made their rated power stock), will show about 291 hp to the rear wheels, for a 69 hp driveline loss. A good chip like the Superchip will add 30-35 hp at the rear wheels & a good airbox kit about 12 to the rear wheels, for a *real* power output of about 330 to *maybe* 335 at the rear wheels.

No stock 1999 or 2000 Lightning has *ever* made anything close to a true 330 hp at the rear wheels as we see posted so often, or chip & filtered making 360+ to the rear wheels, never. That's an inertia dyno for you, and probably a Dynojet. Yes, they *show* those numbers alright, the vehicles owners aren't lying about this at all, they are being truthful when they tell people they got those numbers & post them online; it's just that the numbers are *extremely* optimistic. Cut it by 30-35 hp and you'll be much closer to reality.

Mike,

That's why I was surprised. It was a Mustang chassis dyno, and they used the weight of an L weight they had from the shop. As for the year, I'm not sure. It had the clears, but could have been aftermarket.

Isn't the '01 rated at 380? Based on your numbers 380 plus a potential 47 in mods = 427 at the crank. 427 - 69 driveline loss brings it to 358 at the wheels.

There were two Camaro SS's there. The auto put down in the 250s with some mods. The stick put down just shy of 300 with long tube headers and full exhaust. One of the 'Stang owners I talked to said his car came up some 23 HP different (lower) than his runs on a DynoJet.

Either way, he was putting plenty of power to the ground.

Semper Fi,

I'll update my email link.....

Hi Signmaster,

Ahh, my apologies, I thought you were talking about a '99 or '00 Lightning, don't ask me why.

Yes, you're absolutely right, the 2001 is rated at the higher 380 hp SAE Net, so rear wheel power stock, once again assuming the truck is actually making it's 380 hp rating, would be roughly 310 hp rear wheel. Adding the chip would bring it to 340 hp rear wheel easy, and opening up the intake roughly another 12+ hp rear wheel, which would put it right there at the 350+ hp range rear wheel.

Many of the 2001's are still a bit shy of their 380 hp rating, about 20 hp low, but it certainly is possible to make those numbers on a strong example of a 2001 in that configuration.

The average output of the '99's & '00's stock was about 328 hp in testing at Superchips, with a range of 320 hp to about 365 hp. Most fell in the 320-340 hp range SAE Net at the flywheel in stock trim, with a few making their 360 rating and a couple making a few more ponies. Rear wheel they were mostly in the 260-280 hp range in stock trim, and "chip & filtered" most landed at about 310-320 hp or so. The 2001's are mostly within 20 hp or so of their rating, so they are a bit closer, and a number are hitting their 380 hp stock number. Many of the 2001's are still a bit shy of their 380 hp rating, about 20 hp low, but it certainly is possible to make those numbers on a strong example of a 2001 in that configuration.
