Post Chip Reprograming?

Hello to all,
I was just wondering if it is at all posiable to have my chip re- programed for more HP & TQ. My brother in law has a F350 turbo and he had his reburned for (something like) 96HP, and I just wanted to see if it could be done for gas engines.

Thanksin advance,
-----D-----

Hi big4X4,

The short answer is no. While your Superchip is of course a flash unit that can alwys be updated or changed should the need arise, there isn't any more power to be gained on premium gas. Those Powerstroke diesels are one of very few vehicles that Superchips offers more than one power level for. We only offer multple power levels in the case of a very few forced-induction (meaning torbocharged or supercharged) motors, like the Powerstroke diesel, or the older turbocharged SVO Mustangs & Merkurs, etc. those are the types of engines where we have the ability to "dial in" more power, and it's coming from using more boost and then tuning for it accordingly. In a normally-aspirated engine like yours, we do not have that same type of option, so we're limited primarily by fuel quality.

When your brother in law went to that 100 hp program, which is called the "Extreme" program, it is a custom program at a higher cost (the Offroad program, which adds about 80 hp, doesn't cost more, but the Extreme program does), but much more importantly, he will have to do a number of other modifications to be able to run that program.

He must install dual 3" (or larger) stainless steel downtubes, he'll need at least a 4" exhaust system all the way back, then he'll also need a complete airbox elimination kit, as well as a pyrometer (exhaust gas temperature gauge). He will also loose all ability to tow anything at all with that vehicle, if he's using the Extreme program. He will also lose emissions compliance, as neither the Offroad nor the Extreme program are legal for use on any pollution-controlled vehicle on the road.

If he went to the Offroad program, which is the 80 hp program, then he still needs the 4" exhaust, buit he can still use his stock downtubes and he can get by with just a drop-in K&N air filter in the factory airbox. He'd also be able to tow 4000 lbs.

It is only our "standard" program for the Powerstroke diesels, which adds 60 hp & 115 lbs./ft. of torque, that does not limit towing capacity in those Powerstroke diesels, is still 50-state emissions certified, and does not require any other modifications of any kind. For those reasons, the vast majority of PSD owners opt for the 60 hp program, so they're still fully emissions certified, don't have to do any other modifications and have not limited the vehicle's towing capacity.

To get back to *your* vehicle, in a gasoline engine like yours, the way we increase power is to give it more spark advance and make some other changes, so we're basically limited by the quality of fuel we can tune for. In the case of normally-aspirated gasoline engines, we're limited to pump premium gas.

We could do an even higher power program for 100 octane racing gas if you wanted, but if you wanted to go that route you'd want to do that in our 2-program Flip Chip, so you could still run pump premium when you want, and then race gas when you wanted all-out power. This would give you a pair of performance programs, one for pump premium and the other for racing gas, available at the flip of a switch.

In all candor, when we do a program for say, 98 or higher octane racing gas in these normally-aspirated F-150's, you will see about 10-12 more additional horsepower over what the Superchip you have now is giving you, there won't be another significant gain of 20-30 horsepower. That being the case, not many people opt for that, it's primarily the drag racers who tend to do that type of setup.

If you'd like to go over any of this (or anything else) in more detail, to see what options, etc. you have, please feel free to give us a call, we'll be happy to go over all of this with you.

Thanks for the reply. I can see your point, and will just live with what I have.

Thanks again,
