Jet Chip -vs- Superchip
Jet Chip -vs- Superchip
Anyone with a comparison of these two please forward your personal applications or "word-of-mouth" versions. Thanks I really appreciate it! I currently have the K&N FIPK and would like more zing. Speaking of which, should I go for a specific application? Also, are the Dyno results (25hp/40+ torque) realistic? if so, why is it readily said that Jet only produces some 4-5 hp gains?
Thanks everyone... I'm a rookie to this neighborhood and look forward to "settling" in!!!

Hi expy_with_seoul,
Welcome to F-150 Online!
There really is no comparison between the Superchip and the Jet unit, the Superchip is the winner hands down.
There have been plenty of people here over the years that have tried both the Jet and the Superchip in the same vehicle, and not one has ever posted here that they preferred the Jet, everyone has always preferred the Superchip. If the search function of these message boards is working (and it hasn't been for a few weeks), there are some relevant comparisons between the 2 done by various F-150 Online members; that kind of thing has been posted here numerous times, every few months someone will post that kind of info, and it's always the same in those comparisons, they all prefer the Superchip hands down.
The big differences between Superchips and Jet are:
1.) Jet only tunes generically, meaning only 1 program for all 1998 4.6 automatic F-150's, just for example, whereas the Superchip is programmed for each individual vehicle's exact software revision in it's powertrain computer, meaning we (Superchips) make hundreds of different performance programs for these F-150's each and every model year. This is very important, as these F-150's have hundreds of different factory software revisions each model year, and many functions will be located in different areas of the program from one revision to the next, which is why there is no way to properly optimize a powertrain program "generically". Programming "generically" like Jet does can never yield an optimized powertrain program, which is one of the big reasons why they do little to nothing for these vehicles.
2.) Jet only tunes the engine & adds power at full-throttle, where there are no emissions standards that have to be met, whereas the Superchip tunes and adds power *ALL* the time, at any throttle position and any rpm, from 1000 rpm on up, and is still 50-state emisiosns *certified*, by both CARB & the EPA.
These 2 key differences, the Superchip being programmed for each individual vehicle, and the Superchip working *all* the time, adding power at any throttle position, are the major points, and they make all the difference in the world in the end result.
The power gains you mentioned, 25 hp & 40 lbs./ft., are almost exactly the maxium rated power gains of the Superchip for the 4.6 F-150, actually, it's a maximum of 26 hp & 40 lbs./ft. for the 4.6, and 28 hp & 46 lbs./ft. for the 260hp 5.4 motor.
In round numbers, think of the Superchip as a 10%-12% power gainer.
The program changes in the Superchip are also far more thorough than with Jet or anyone else, Superchips is the company that began this industry 19 years ago, and has been tuning these veihcles for best performance longer than anyone else. This gives them experience, knowledge & expertise that others like Jet simply cannot match.
If you'd like to go over any of this in detail, please feel free to give us a call or shoot us an email, we're happy to speak with you.
If the search function is working, you should be able to get some good info on this from past posts over the months & years here. If not, I'm sure a few others with direct experience with both chips on the same vehicle, which is what is needed for a relevant comparison, will hopefully post here in response as well.
Best of luck with your truck, & we hope you'll hang out here on F-150 Onlinw with us in your spare time. It's a great place to learn what makes these trucks "tick", and also meet some new friends!

Mr. Troyer,
Thank you for taking the time to reply to my inquiry regarding the "chipping" mod to my 99 Expy. I have been taking your advise and reading the various discussions here on F150online and have made up my mind... SUPERCHIPS is for me!!!
Once I can supply SUPERCHIPS my computer # and other relevant data, what would be the QUICKEST possible way of getting my hands on one? I have never been a patient person and have lived by the phrase: Kid in a candy store!!! I read up on the How to do's and am ready to do my install!!!
Thanks again Mr. Troyer for all of your valued information and knowledge. I definitely got the right answer that I was looking for.

While it looks like you have already gotten all the info you need, I figured it wouldn't hurt to document my experiences, just in case someone else isn't quite convinced.
I had a Jet chip in my last truck (97 Dakota V-6), and I got the Jet because it was the only brand I could find for my truck. Everyone makes one for the V-8, but not he V-6. I now have a 99 Expy with a 5.4L, and I just installed a Diablosport chip (basically the same type of tuning as the Superchip - 2DSPERFORMANCE.COM sold both for the same price, but the Diablosport worked better with my computer mounting brackets). They didn't feel there was much of a performance difference between the two.
Anyway, the Jet chip didn't give me much power at all, but it was very effective at killing my gas mileage. After putting the Jet in the truck, I averaged around 13MPG (remember that this was in a V-6 Dakota). Without the chip I was getting a good 2-3 mpg more. If you take the cost of the increased gas consumption and combine it with the cost of premium fuel, it was certainly not worth the minimal horsepower gains. It also didn't seem to run quite right - cold starts were slow, sometimes it wouldn't idle right, etc. On top of that, Jet wanted me to put a 160 degree thermostat in the truck - that is not a vable option in wisconsin.
The DiabloSport chip, on the other hand, has given more power and much better throttle response. It is too early to tell what the mileage effects are, but I certainly haven't lost any. This chip has made the truck much more fun to drive, and I would recommend it to anyone.
