Recently picked up a 96 4X4 extra cab with 113,000 miles. Just today I had the injectors cleaned and was amazed at the cloud of soot that came out. Hoping for an improvement in gas mileage but wondering if a chip is something that will help. BTW it is a 302 and cruise is worthless unless on flat land as the tach will hit 3K going up a hill. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Usually a tune will improve hp, torque, and mileage a little. I recommend one.

Only thing is - 96 is the first year of OBD2, and the last year of the 302 in a F-150. I have to wonder what handheld devices are compatible and who can write tunes for it.

With OBD2, you want to use a handheld programmer, not a chip.

I have never seen any handheld tuners for a 302 but then again I wasn't looking for it.

Guys - you can still get SCT custom for this engine and model year.

Try Troyer, VMP, and PHP.

And you can get it in either a handheld OR a chip (that PCM has a J3 port ).

Example: http://www.sctflash.com/products.php?PID=31

If I can get tuning for an '88 GT, the OP sure as hell can ....
