Question for Mike T

Considering purchasing a chip for my 98 5.4L. My question is about the advertised HP and TQ gains. Are those flywheel or rearwheel gains? Other than increased power, removed rev limiter, and firmer shifts, what else does the chip do? And finally, by firmer shifts do you mean the amount of time the transmission takes to change gears? Please clarify "Firm Shifts" for me

Thanks,

Tom

Hi Bad Dreams,

Sure, no problem!

The rated gains, like most parts these days, are SAE Net at the flywheel, so you have a figure you can use to compare to your stock power rating, which is experssed as SAE Net at the flywheel.

That's what the Superchip can do, is what you've already said, raise power, remove the top speed limiter, raise the rev limiter if needed, and then firm up the shifts in the automatics.

What we mean by "firming the shifts" is a very thorough recalibration of the transmission programming, removing the upshift delay signal that is used to deliberately elongate the upshift, because that induces slippage, which produces a lot of additional & unnecessary heat, the #1 enemy of any automatic transmission. We also remove the downshift delays & bring the line pressure up a bit. This nets you a better shift feel that adds more service life to the bands & clutches thanks to the reduction in slippage, and gives better performance from a quicker & tighter shift. The powertrain also responds quicker thanks to the elimination of the various delays, retards, etc.

And yes, by "quicker" we mean that we do reduce the amount of time it takes to actually perform the upshift once the signal is sent from the ECU to command the transmission to upshift.

If you'd like to go over this in greater detail, please feel free to give us a call.

Is it possible/recommended that when 92oct fuel is not available, I use 90oct with some octane booster? If so, can you recommend brands? I suppose I'm getting a little ahead of myself here because I don't even have a chip yet, but my curiousity is at the wheel!
